I guess because I'm a Classic series fan, the shift in tone didn't bother me very much. Capaldi (and even Eccleston to some extent) is just more like an old school Doctor in their alien-ness, whereas Doctors like Tennant's and Smith's are actually more the anomalies in the history of the series. And it's not even an age thing, because even Peter Davison's Doctor (the Fifth), who is the youngest (well, had the youngest actor) next to Smith, wasn't allowed to touch or be affectionate with his companions and comes off pretty cold and alien much of the time. And I mean, don't get me wrong, that style of Doctor is still (mostly) protective of their companions and they still care, but at the end of the day, they're alien, so they don't always react or act in ways we might want/like. And this era of the show is just reminding us of that. (Sort of like a more blunt version of when Ten said to Rose: "You can spend the rest of your life with me, but I can't spend the rest of mine with you. I have to live on. Alone. That's the curse of the Time Lords." He's got to keep people at arms length, because losing them hurts so much.) I personally think the interesting thing about Capaldi's Doctor is that he's raw and unmasked -- much like Vastra pointed out in the last episode. He's not wearing a charming face to try and get people to like him, he's being himself. And so I guess it's just a matter of Clara (and the audience) getting used to seeing The Real Him. And I love that, personally. But obviously, YMMV.

It's interesting, in the original (leaked) version of this story, when Rusty returns to the Dalek fleet at the end, he basically suicide bombs them, destroying them all. But that was cut in the aired version, so it's left a bit ambiguous in the end. Not sure how I feel about that.
