Princess Mononoke Fan Art

This past weekend my family met up with some friends to go see the newly restored Princess Mononoke on IMAX, which, if playing in a theater near you, I can't recommend highly enough to take the time off to go see. The picture and sound were incredible.

The last time I saw Mononoke in the theater was when it was first released in the US at a little independent theater near the art college I was studying at. It was also the film that introduced me to Miyazaki and, as an animation student, completely blew me away. I immediately want back and saw it a week (maybe two?) later; this time with my now wife. It was our first date. So the film holds a special place in my heart. Years later, we're both huge Ghibli fans and it was pretty neat to introduce the film that made us that way to our two boys by seeing it in the theater again. They really liked it (especially the forest spirits).

A couple of days later I was in one of those rare afternoons where I was waiting to hear back on some stuff from the graphic novel I'm finishing up and the graphic novel I'm currently starting on. So I decided to indulge in a little bit of fan art. It was originally intended to be just a quick sketch of Mononoke but thought maybe I'd put Ashitaka in it too. Then decided it could use a wolf. And some forest spirits. From there it just escalated. So it took me a little longer then planned! And now I'm behind on everything. But I'm happy with how it turned out. As usual, there's process pics in the image carousel (plus a super red variant I included just because I thought it looked kinda cool).
