🧝♀️ THE MYTH OF HAIRLESS ELVES
Added 2025-04-20 12:59:50 +0000 UTCor why they most likely have hair “down there”
Every now and then, a curious little idea floats around fandom spaces: that elves don’t have pubic hair. Not a single strand. As if nature looked at these magical beings and said, “Nope, too pretty for body hair.”
But let’s be real — biologically, that makes zero sense. In mammals (and elves are basically magical mammals), pubic hair serves a purpose. It signals sexual maturity, helps protect sensitive skin from friction, and even helps trap pheromones. Yup, those scents — the ones that can attract a mate. Considering how elves are often portrayed as hyper-sensory, emotional, and sensual beings, this actually lines up pretty well.
So where did the idea come from? Probably from the urge to make elves seem pure, ethereal, almost untouchable. Like any reminder of the body — especially female bodies — is somehow too crude. Add a few waves of fanart, smooth flawless skin, and that high-gloss fantasy aesthetic, and suddenly... poof. Everyone’s imagining dolls instead of people.
But let’s face it — hairless elves aren’t really fantasy anymore. That’s just a fetish.
Personally, I prefer my elves to be real, vivid, sensual. Magical, yes — but still flesh and blood. How do you imagine them?

First up Elves are a fantasy, so they can be anything that we as humans want to imagine them to be. Secondly, you get authors who borrowed from folklore and added their own aesthetic understanding to their stories I.e. Tolkien was a devout catholic and thus his aesthetic sensibilities were informed by his Catholic/ western upbringing and influences. His elves were portrayed as catholic poster children: virtuous including lack of or very restrained sexual behaviour in form of monogamy, not giving into urges like humans, not eating meat, being otherworldly, eternal, having superhuman strength- a bit like angels really. In Tolkien’s lore they had to be completely different in every sense of beings, yes humanoids but not human. This has manifested into some sort of gold standard of how elves are supposed to be. The Witcher lore has not followed that model but made its elves in fact more human. The aen seidhe are almost like humans, even interbreeding with humans, the dryads are a bunch of savage Amazonian, the aen elle are a murdering albeit, aesthetically most pleasing lot of them all. Which I personally, and here we come back to what we want to see a mythical creature to function as, prefer. Elves have hairs all over their body or they only have hairs on their scalp, eyebrows and eyelashes. Either way, both are good as both are still just a fantasy and therefore I like your interpretation of elves having body hair.
