Character Redesign!

Or rather, just an expansion of the earlier design :) - I liked quite a few aspects of the prior version, but I felt it really just need just a bit more direction to get everything to come together. A black and white sailor uniform felt just wacky enough while being recognizable and differentiated!

So here we are :) I think it feels just that slightly "off" enough for me (and hopefully you) to do a double take rather than just go "oh, another cool lady", but perhaps it's possible to refine it more.

The tattoos are pretty fun, so I kept quite a bit of them, with a bit more effort put into figuring them out properly. For her hand, subtlety prevailed with it being changed to a more concealed prosthetic version that I think felt just right with the tattoos - sort of like patterned porcelain!

As always, I'm eager to hear what you think! And thank you for your continued support :)

p.s. I want to also do a quick reflection on the exhibition, and how fun it was to be there in person, but that will come just in a bit.

Character Redesign!

That makes sense, thank you! It seems I'm on a good path, so hopefully someday I can improve. I do like to spend some time daily observing artwork with good color and light to see how other artists deal with it and for the past couple of months your art has been a constant on either my desktop or my actual desk. So you're helping even when you don't know it haha x) Edit: ops, I think patreon had a hiccup with my comment.

Matcha Flavoured Frog

I definitely want to develop this character in a new direction, but she's probably not an actual schoolgirl :] Thank you for the kind words! Light and color is something I've approached pretty systematically over the past years (just see the amount of grey tones I used to apply!) I would say it's a mix of being directionally clear with what you want to use, and also just a lot of mileage. The latter really helps with correcting color with "instinct", which is difficult to explain! But references are a great place to start as you said, just be careful to analyze and simplify, rather than being drawn into color picking. I hope that was helpful!

GUWEIZ

I love prosthetics in art, they add a point of interest to the character. And so much potential for the story! I'm actually curious about her story now. Is she an actual school girl? Why is she swinging that big sword and how did she loose her hand? I hope she'll reveal it in time! I do have a question related to light and color and how you use it. You always have a good grasp of light and color. Would you be okay sharing your approach? How did you study to get this good? Was it lots of painting studies from references? I hope it's okay to ask!

Matcha Flavoured Frog

Then more natural is good, perhaps look at prosthetics from that time period?

John Pope

Possible alternative! Or perhaps a different set of clothes :)

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the honest feedback, it's valuable!

GUWEIZ

Thank you!!

GUWEIZ

I wanted it to just feel a little uncanny :)

GUWEIZ

I'm glad you like it!

GUWEIZ

Thank you!

GUWEIZ

I wouldn't quite say cyberpunk, maybe 1990s-2000s era in our world!

GUWEIZ

They are always a pain to draw, no matter how many times I've done it... Jaywalkers are the true menace to society!

GUWEIZ

Thank you! I think we can keep the jacket and singlet look as a "casual" design as well, I'm delighted to hear that you like this version so much :) I think I really wanted her to stand out from the previous characters more.

GUWEIZ

Thank you! I felt it might be worthwhile to introduce some design elements that clash just the right amount, I'm glad you like them!

GUWEIZ

Thank you! Massive swords are still a trope I can't get over :) Also no jaywalking pls, it's clearly illegal.

GUWEIZ

I kinda like both designs. Maybe the other one will be the (forgotten/disappeared) big sister

Conaiz

the whole design is cute. The overall impression is very good, however, i think the sailor uniform is a tad too cute. The urban look vibed with me more

MSM

I love this! Looks so dope

QueueSS

She gives off a cutesy vibe with the sailor uniform

Nifty Sushi

Me likes it man.

Neil Pinnock

Excellent πŸ‘ Great work!

Netzach

Is her world supposed to be a cyberpunk one or more analagous to our world?

John Pope

Braids are my biggest weakness. Also, glad the police are putting away dangerous jaywalkers.

T_B_Tato

Love the new character design probably my favourite, her braids and light hair colour give a fresh look and compliment the other two characters nicely! Personally I do prefer the previous outfit of the jacket, gives her that punk and up to no good energy but the sailor uniform was a nice surprise, also again tattoos look sick as always 🀌

Vincent

The new design is a girl with a lot sense of contrast for me . She wears traditional uniform but with a lot of tattoos on her body , with so much blood on her chest but only convicted for jaywalking, and she use a European zweihander not the katana I thought she would use when I first saw her , I love these contrast , make her really impressive.

"Hi Guweiz, I wonder could you please convert each step of the process walkthrough into a picture and upload it to Patreon? This way we can understand each of your steps in more detail. Thank you!"

Del Shen
