GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP51 (Talk + Paint)

I'm looking into recording more full processes and sharing them here! So as a start, I thought I'd get into painting and talking at the same time a little more :) I feel it would become incredibly dry and repetitive if I were to just explain the technicalities of what's happening on screen all the time, so one of my goals is to also mix things up and talk about a little more than just that.

New Character Sketches

Remember I mentioned a couple months back that I was going to sketch a lot more? The schedule hasn't let up so I haven't had the time to really get into it... Still I'd like to show some sketches I've done so far! I've been sitting on these for a while hoping I'd get more time to start coloring them up (I think I will soon!) but I thought now would be a nice time to share them anyway :)

In the Rain

It's been a little bit since the last set! These are as challenging as always - picking and creating an interesting story, finding a good composition for the opening frame, and balancing things so they flow reasonably.

This time I went with something I've actually never really done before - having characters emote strongly with their facial expressions and body language! I know the characters I draw are almost always incredibly stoic, but honestly that was just because I couldn't reall...

Irena Alternate Design!

It was fun to create an alternate design for her after all this time!
As a figure design there were some considerations to try and make things a little more flowy, hence the larger coat and let down hair! And to contrast the heavier coat, I thought a more form fitting outfit might work well :) It's an honor (and really cool) to see something that just started as a drawing years ago become physical! Process Steps "Office Politics"

Just like for the other process walkthrough this month, my voice couldn't quite make it so we're back to the old format just for a bit! I think it's nice that it's more digestible for those who might not have the time for the longer video explanations so there's a little bit of silver lining :)

For this piece my struggle was really on getting the cloth folds right, so much so that it prompted me to make a quick guide...

Clothing and fabric folds have always been a huge pain for me so I thought it might be good to get two birds with one stone this time and make a bit of a concept or revision sheet for you guys (and myself too)!

We're temporarily reverting back to the format of yore for this month as my throat is still pretty inflamed from flu:( It went away and came back once already so I'm being a little careful, fingers crossed). Ding ding ding *new character time*!

It's been a while since I had this much fun (maybe it was really high time for a new character)!

Something about being free from design constraints, self imposed as they might have been, has quite the healing effect. Drawing the motorcycle was really fun, but horrifying daunting at first until I realized I didn't actually need to draw that much of it :) I've uploaded the process steps together with the piece this time too. Office Politics

A fun set of poses I found and wanted to give it a go painting! This time the color palette is really simple, which is a nice change of pace :) Cloth folds are still a weakness of mine so I'd like to make a video really consolidating what I've learnt this time (hint: it's quite a bit, but still not enough) - so please look forward to that!

EP48 (Process Walkthrough)

The process breakdown is up! It was a tough set this time, so there are plenty of lessons learnt and a lot of build on. The more "surreal" setup of setting and lighting this time compared to my usual stuff definitely brought me out of the comfort zone to say the least and made the process one of significant frustration... There are plenty of areas to improve as well, with perspective being as important as ever. Still, it was a good experience!

A new set! This one really went through a lot of back and forth between different ideas trying to get them to fit together as well as I can! It ended up taking quite a bit longer than I expected, and some unfamiliar elements were not easy to manage. Ultimately I decided to have the location be the main connecting factor here. Morning Errands

GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP47.1 (Live Paint)

Trying out a new format of video to spice things up just a little! This time we're live painting works that are not yet finished - I think it feels really different to commentate and paint working on something that is still in progress versus going back to analyze a finished piece. I think they each have their pros so I wanted to try this style for a little bit!

OIA Wrap-up!

The event is finally done and dusted! I've had the best time speaking to everyone who came and liked my work - given it's Osaka (as compared to Tokyo) and at a ticketed venue, there were surprisingly many people who knew me and had come! It's at these times that I both feel a sense of happiness, but also anxiety about needing to get even better. (It's mostly great though!)

If it looks a bit familiar, it's because I decided on remastering an original piece rather than creating a new one for the final slot. I was already 60% done with the initial candidate when I really considered what I should bring to the event. (I'll share that with you guys soon too!)

The 4th of 5 works! This almost about concludes the reveal (there's a bit of a surprise on the last one!) of the artworks going out to my first major art fair next week. I'd like to write a little about how I've prepared the whole thing so feel free to read along!

Art fairs are a sort of event that most of us regular internet people don't really come into contact much, or at all for that matter. When you think of fine art and stuff that's pretty hard to understand, that's the main kind...

Update!: I've accidentally left out some submissions! I will definitely catch up on them ASAP so if yours is missing (for now), please don't worry!

The length says it all! It's been a busy couple of months and I always feel bad for not being able to put out as many works as I used to. This was a great chance for me to give back a bit more to all of you who are supporting me all this time:)

This already took so long, but somehow I feel like it could do with just even a bit more detail...

This is probably the highest resolution piece I've ever drawn so far! But we will be printing it for an upcoming art fair in May at A0 size, so I had to do it. Speaking of which, I'll be in Osaka at the Osaka International Art 2025 art fair with this + 4 other brand new works! So if you're in town from 31st May to 1st June, feel free to come to the Osaka Jo Hall - I look forward to seeing...
