After Work 2

This set was ROUGH (in a good way)! It was a lot tougher and I've never recalled facing as many moments in a single set wondering if I could get to to all come together. Strangely, it has really brought a sense of life and motivation back for me after the past couple months of slump, almost like I found something worth drawing again!

Planning out this particular scene, I wanted to make sure to challenge myself to not run away from any detail - rather than planning scenes around drawing less, I wanted to be able to draw and show more "good stuff" instead. Detailed environments can be really exhausting to portray, but I think there isn't any alternative to the effect they can bring in realizing a fictional world, is there?
I really can't wait to tell you guys more about how each piece came together - perhaps even multiple process videos going into more depth for each frame?

For now, I just want to say thank you again for sticking around with me! I know not having frequent posts can be a bit of a bummer. And it's not something I want at all, but for pieces like this, I really appreciate the ability to just sit down over many sessions over weeks to work on it carefully.

As always, please feel free to let me know what you think!

Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, and in such length as well! I think the "live" type of drawing and mistake making definitely has its own teaching value, as well as dispelling any misconceptions of how the process should always be easy and straightforward. For the most part, I sometimes just do not have the energy to really "produce" a video, with editing and all the frills. Personally, I still very much rather put that energy to making new works (which is everyone's, and my own favorite) so I prefer to keep things simpler and digestible, which can become increasingly difficult and time-consuming with longer recordings. Partially that I also why I keep the pledge value low, so no patron ever feels they overpaid for simpler content. That said, I just put up a 1hr30min + live drawing and talking, so that may be something you're interested in! Thank you again for your very detailed input, I really appreciate it!

I hear you man, Yeah its defintely a taxing experience, I started recording myself painting recently as well and I find that its especially taxing when I dont know how to do something well or arent sure where to go with the piece. The added stress of feeling like someone watching behind me while I dont know what Im doing can be very tiring over a longer period of time. One thing I have learned as well from being a viewer, and am trying to practice so i can do this better myself; Is that sometimes the quality the creator set for themselves is very high and maybe viewers are actually more than happy to indulge in something a creator considers to be less than desired quality. For me personally, seeing you struggle were sometimes the most eye opening experiences for me. Theres something about seeing someone who make amazing work, also "struggle through the trenches" with the rest of us, shows me "Oh thats how it is actually and going through it is part of the process" Some times that courage and possibility to reach something thorugh just persevering and figuring it out as you go, and that this is how it actually looks, that this is how messy it can be. Seeing the full struggle...its hard to describe, its almost like a different type of high quality content/teaching insight, than the direct approach of most tutorials where they layout very clear steps & groundwork. Its like showing people whats possible rather than telling them? If you understand basketball terms, it would be similar to how shooting a 3 point shot a few feet behind the 3 point line was seen as insane and unnecessary, but once a player called Steph Curry started making it a consistent thing, everyone else in the NBA also began to do it, creating a surge of new tactics and playstyles to combat and also utilize this new wave of possibilities, and as a result it raised the overall skill level of everyone present, it "opened their eyes" to what was possible. If you ever decide to do another one of these in the future, maybe a thought would be, do exactly what you did for the mega tutorial. Only difference is, when you need time to figure things out maybe even a few days to do so. Just leave it on record whenever you open PS and not talk and turn those parts into a slightly sped up video so its easy content on your part and can focus energy into the piece. If its about quality and flow, i imagine, either having a time stamp of which parts are "figuring things out" in the comment section or even just throwing in a red circle on the bot R or L of screen (in editing software), so viewers who want to skip, can do so easily scrubbing through video, and later on if needed come back to rewatch. Theres so many ways and ideas to go about it, so if you ever want some please let me know. And of course, even with all this said, I often find that for me, it is still just stressful/scary to have others watch me fail over and over again on video. So I understand if the emotional aspect of it is something you feel you dont want to have to go through esp with the amount of things you already have to do running your entire business and kickstarter. Alright well, wish you the best & a day of wellness! Gene

Thank you for your very detailed reply, I really appreciate it! The full process videos are definitely something different and I agree they can be uniquely helpful in unexpected ways. They are quite taxing to do however, and I just haven't had enough energy to really commit to doing one especially since I want to be able to be sure of the quality and flow throughout the process. I am definitely open to doing more in the future with that said. Thank you again for the kind words!

Thank you so much for the transparency of the struggle, not just in making the piece but that there is a very real burn out that happens in life, and am so happy for you that this has made you feel the passion and love again! Please, I hope you can do more full process videos! I recently started watching the 1st episode and mega character demos and going through all the nitty gritty with you taught me alot of the things. Not just in rendering but also the struggles you go through as well w composition lighting, posing etc even midway into the process. It has been a broadening of my own bounadaries and perspective that its just part of the process. As well as how you are able to break the noodling cycle when trying new things with the big ball decisiveness to just go back in history and paint = erasing all that work. Theres so many other nuggets too on technicals as well that Ive left as notes on your youtube videos. But essentially, in showing your whole process with all the nitty gritty. I feel theres so much value, in the things that you may not notice yourself. Afterall we all have different aspects of our "puzzle" in knowledge and its hard to be able to pinpoint whats the most useful for everyone. Sometimes the most useful thing for someone could be a small press of a button that you may never have thought to talk about. But either way all thats to say, I'm happy for you brother, and I hope you do shower us with those full process videos even if you narrate only parts of it (or even dont narrate) Either way I would appreciate it all. Best, Gene

Gene Zhao

The way in which you're able to set the mood in your artwork is second to none. Thank you for always inspiring me and many others to practice drawing!

Vitor

Thank you very much! The world is very inspired by old HK and Kowloon indeed :) I'm very happy that you enjoy my works this much, it's always great to hear!

GUWEIZ

Thank you as always! I think the key is actually simplicity, sometimes photos and movies may have a level of complexity that doesn't quite translate well to illustration. Even if you capture all of it, often the result can just be inferior to a well presented set of simple lighting rules. Even in more "realistic" scenes, a clear lighting setup can make things way more legible. My example would be frame 3, where a complex scene can be really managed with a couple of simple light sources. So it's really a matter of taking your favorite parts from the study material, and then applying them "on your own" per se, rather than attempting to replicate the exact effect.

GUWEIZ

I've got that in the works! If anything I feel it helps a bit with pacing rather than tossing out a huge 2 hour one :)

GUWEIZ

Thank you, I want to always try my best!

GUWEIZ

Thank you very much, I'm very glad that you have found the motivation to keep pushing forward as well!

GUWEIZ

That's why they're the bad guys :)) And thank you for your kind words! I've drawn this particular place once or twice before, but it's been a couple years since

GUWEIZ

Thank you, I'm glad that my efforts have paid off, I actually did sketch out a floorplan for their little hideout too, I'll be sure to share it soon!

GUWEIZ

Thank you very much, I really wanted to push myself in terms of detail this time round!

GUWEIZ

Thank you so much! Animation is definitely something way out of my reach right now, but I can definitely keep drawing more stories with these characters :) I'm glad that you find inspiration from my work, it's always very heartwarming to hear!

No words can describe my feelings right now, the city is like a future version of Kowloon Walled City, I love these scenes, the multiple billboards , the tall buildings, the dark rainy days, a cold beautiful girl and a quiet home. The words on billboards are interesting, I see a bar also named Irena and a pharmacy called underworld, maybe you will draw them in the future? The 情报事务所 is like a another home to me now, I can even tell the furniture in this house and recognize the clothes and shoes they wear in which scene before. I'm really thankful to you and your works, it's been a busy and hard month to me and seeing your paintings really release my stress. And by the way, Irena's legs and butts in the 4th picture are so charming, the shades are just 神来之笔, wish to see more in the future :)

I need gifs 😿

Your work never ceases to amaze me! If you don't mind me asking, can you share some tips in regard to study values and realistic lighting? I found studying from photos or movies tends to be a hit or miss sometimes, so I'm just wondering what's your take on this topic.

Cristina

would love to see multiple process videos for this set, if it's not too much of a chore for you of course
