EP29 - Designing Better Hair

This has been a much requested tutorial for some time now! I break down the basics of how to approach and start drawing hair for your characters with a full live-demo :) You can get the .psd file too if you want to follow along (attached below).

I know I didn't quite mention it in the video, but please feel free to submit results of you following this tutorial on the Discord and I will definitely be more than happy to give feedback if you would like!

In other news, I think I've got a really nice new set cooking up right now - which I've been working on for about 150 hours so far this month! Very regrettably I'm not quite sure if I can finish it up properly within the month, and I don't want to rush things.

I really rarely talk up my own work, but I had a lot of fun doing this and I think you guys will really enjoy it. Unfortunately this has been a more quiet month on my end for new works posted, but I think this time spent will be well worth it!

Thank you guys so much as always for being incredibly patient and supportive.

Thank you, very glad that you liked it! The ribbon method is one way to visualize it, but I personally find it can be a little restrictive when first laying out the hair and corresponding patterns, especially when it comes to messier hairstyles. Sometimes the individual ribbons can twist, overlap, wrap over/under each other, which can take a lot of energy and attention away from finding the overall shape. With a simpler, cleaner hairstyle, the ribbon method works great for me as well!

I'm glad you found it helpful!

I really enjoyed the video. I like your approach to study to flow of the different hair styles. You seems to consider it as a whole, detailed progressively to give it a more natural feel. Often, artists give the advice of considering the hair as a collection of ribbons flowing from the skull. Do you think it's another valid way or does it have some downsides?

Excellent format on this one. Great video. Hair is always a challenge for me and I liked your explanation.
