August Process Special (EP07)

It's been some time! I'm mostly fine with my health now and am working on new stuff again, as well as catching up the delayed August videos. I also want to say thank you for everyone's concern in the comments of the last post, it was very touching.

I'm trying something a bit new for this set of process steps! Rather than the usual paragraph per step for 6-7 steps, I'm going through each .psd for the individual pieces and talking about progressing from each phase to the next. It's definitely a bit rough around the edges as I'm still figuring out how to best talk about each step without going on too long, but I really hope you will find it helpful.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think!

p.s. Unfortunately, I still have to be away for the last 2 weeks of September so things will continue to be a bit slow for the rest of the month until October just as a heads up. Thank you again so much for being here and I really appreciate it!

This is such a great video!! New patron here, and I'm really happy I joined! You gave very clear explanations and it's helping me figure out some things in my own process. Thank you so much for this gem!!

Yaine

bumping this as it got removed for spam due to the links lolol

Cybernomu

I am so glad I decided to become your patreon. This is beyond amazing. Thank you so much.

Lala

She is, more on her soon :)

GUWEIZ

Hi, it’s a bit off topic here but is this character from Quiet Dream the same character from Bad Guy series? Just curious

Cristina

Hey Guweiz! This isn't extremely relevant to this specific video, but I have a question about set dressing in illustrations; particularly how you decide what "props" go into a scene. There is such a wealth of things that make a scene feel natural and believable, good examples of this include your pieces "doctors office" (https://www.instagram.com/p/CMq09DFHH3Y/) and your second edition of the Bad Guys series - especially the laundry scene in the kitchen (https://www.artstation.com/artwork/eaaRBX). I feel particularly excited about the latter, because it really feels like all the typically mundane elements one might find in these rooms exist in the paintings and are arranged in such a natural way that it lends them an incredible degree of realism. While people may not pay these elements too much mind, I think it's truly one of the things that can define a scene, giving it a sense of intimacy and familiarity. Anyways, I could gush over these forever, but my question is what goes through your mind when designing your scenes? How do you decide what goes where, and what kind of prop lends your scene more "believability" so to speak? Maybe I'm thinking too hard about it hahaha, but I'd really love to pick your brain about this sort of stuff!

Cybernomu

Thank you! I'm surprised, I feel like I'm quite monotone usually :)

GUWEIZ

The free transform is really a semi-hidden gem, it allows for pretty convenient mapping of surfaces with textures and details, especially in a painting context w/o 3D

GUWEIZ

Thank you, I really appreciate it!

GUWEIZ

It's definitely a more flexible format, the pictures are nice for quick reference but I think the video format allows for a lot more stuff to be fitted in :)

GUWEIZ

No worries, I'm doing much better now!

GUWEIZ

Glad it was useful! I tend to use the layers as "save states" past the first few with line sketches, so they can stack up pretty quick

GUWEIZ

I'm glad you find it helpful! It's got me thinking if I should just do 1 big process walk through for all pieces of the month video instead of the small ones. Definitely will think about putting up a poll in October for that, thanks!

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the concern!

GUWEIZ

I'm doing much better now :)

GUWEIZ

I came in for the art and tutorials, but I'm staying because of the personality!

in fact, i had a majour breakthrough thanks to this video. i am working on developing a process for creating images wich use a combination of 3d rendering and digital painting, and 2 things you talked about in that video were especially helpful. first the free transform demonstration in the 3rd artwork (the floor props example), and the low resolution approach in the last artwork.

Don't worry we will always be here to support you. <3

Glad to read you're better, Woah this was so great and much more insightful than the step by step pictures. It's always cool to see the decision making during an artwork because you can learn something new (I certainly did) or it even can help you figuring out an aspect of your work in progress. I loved this one, I'm hoping to see more like it, whenever you can, of course! Take care!

learclow

Oh thank you so much, i'm honored, just please don't push yourself, we all love you ❤❤❤

This was amazingly helpful! Thank you so much for this video, I like the process explaining in video format! However... Can we talk about the fact that you had 400+ layers in your first image??? 😱😱😱

Fibox

thank you SOO MUCH for this video, it was infinitely more useful to me than the usual mini process steps. it shows how every piece has a different route to the destination and unique challenges. i think all the examples you showed were very valuable for showing a nice variety. of course the 3rd one is my favorite, in my opinion one of the best pieces you made recently, and it now populates my desktop background on one of my PCs in my studio. i think one way to get as much as possible out of this video is to watch it while you are working on a piece and see if anything in there applies to it. at the end of the day the artists themself have to know what they want do do and figure out whats missing, but i think this can give people inspiration and perspective for reflecting and troubleshooting and improving their own workflow. i also think being able to get closer to what is actually happening "behind the scenes" during the creation gives you a better idea what you have to go through to create something. another thing that came to my mind is, since you create a lot of art, and propably cant create such a detailed video on every piece, (and maybe you shouldnt try to cover every piece to keep it more focused and accessable) i though maybe do a poll on what artworks people would like to see such a video on OR pick out just a few artworks that were the most different from each other in how you got there and what was challenging about them? i dont know, i just something that popped into my mind.

Djulina

Thank you for the video! Hoping you'll fully recover soon 💙
