GUWEIZ Patreon Series EP06

This month's video was decided by a poll here on Patreon, it was pretty close, but character design won out in the end!

In this video I tried to be a bit more comprehensive in covering some basics about visual character design and what it can do for you, plus a 30min normal speed demo covering the design process in more of a sketch format.

Looking back I did feel it was bit unfortunate I didn't have time to go through some of my own designs and talk about why I made choices this way or the other (especially as that may have been why some voters chose this topic), but perhaps that could be a video for another time!

I'm still new when it comes to painting and commentating simultaneously, so maybe future x1 speed painting will just be recorded first and voiced later. So I hope you can forgive me for probably sounding a bit janky and repetitive towards the end this time.

As always, please feel free to make requests, suggestions, or give feedback in the comments, thank you so much for your support as always!

Your teaching is really help me improve my skill Teacher Guweiz :) . It fun to see how you design character from knight, change to wizard and change again to mysterious lady holding umbrella. Sorry if my comment is late with your latest update.

No problem, I'm glad you find the processes helpful! Regarding finding direction, it can get really tough, you'll be surprised how many of my works only found direction 70% of the way through. A method I've been trying is to just find something that you're 50% satisfied with and go with it, the drawing process itself can help shed light on what you want to do. I think it's a win-win process, although I sometimes still struggle to get into the mindset for it.

I've been catching up on these videos to help me warm up the past few days and I've really enjoyed them so much. I've learned a lot from studying your illustrations and watching your process. Thank you for the hard work you put into them! I was wondering what advice you have on finding direction/ideas? I find that I go through periods of knowing exactly what to draw everyday to suddenly not knowing what to put down. Like sometimes I'll get excited to create an IP and even start world building, but then suddenly it's like there's a drought. I guess a better way of phrasing it is how do you push through not having ideas? And I wouldn't call it "art block" since I will still manage to do stuff I'm satisfied with. It's just getting over the post "honey moon phase" of starting a new project. I don't know if that makes sense? Ahaha....

Thank you, I'm glad it turned out alright! It's no mistake I'm still very much learning myself on how to design a variety of interesting characters, so hopefully in the future I can deliver more than my "regular fare" as well :)

Hello and no worries! I figured if someone really wanted to rip the videos they could anyway, so I'd rather not handicap 99.9% of all patrons just because of them :) It also helps people who just want to subscribe for a while, and doesn't deny them access when the patronage runs out.

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad you found it helpful! Of course, feel free to use photo references to help you figure out things, the good thing about art is that you can essentially piece together and create your ideal design, so go ahead and use plenty of references to find what you like. Composition is a good suggestion as well, it's a bit tough as a lot of it is personal preference, but I'm sure I can try to work out a basics guide in the future :)

GUWEIZ

hello guweiz! thank you so much for including download links for the videos so that we can watch it in our free time! i haven't been able to look at your patreon stuff recently due to irl events and having the option to download it and watch it in my free time is extremely convenient, appreciate it loads that you trust us with it! thank you so much!

I like these checklist/summary pages you make, I can save them for later reference! Something that keeps me away from character design is my lack of anatomy knowledge... yeah I can draw a person, but only if I'm using a photo reference lol do you think this is needed to start designing some characters? Also, I'm looking forward for a composition tutorial, I'm really struggling with that. I love that, even though, sometimes, you don't use a dynamic pose or something like that, your paintings are always so interesting to see. How do you come up with these ideas? :0 This video was really helpful, you explained the process pretty well and loved the tips you gave, you're doing great! <3

Thanks for your new update. Appreciate your tutorial...

i think you did a really good job with this video! i certainly didnt feel like it was too repetitive. i think everything you showed and explained was very useful and had a place in the video. i hope you do more of this format. when you said you might go into more detail on how you do the face in another video you made me really look forward to that. even though your charachters always share some similarities, like gender, age, asian physiognomy and more a tendency towards nitty gritty charachters with serious mood, you always find a way to come up with something new in this area. when you said "occupation, like maybe an assasin or a salary man" and "just look up what a normal mage looks like" you made me chuckle. out of context these things really sound ridiculous. thanks for the video!

Djulina

Thank you for this! I always love your tutorials. Looking forward to the ones on lighting and color management.
