Waiting (Full-res + Process steps up soon!)

This was a tough piece to finish satisfactorily! There were so many details and parts to making a setting like this work well that I actually felt quite constrained from doing much design-wise. Nonetheless, it was a great learning experience as always, and I'm very much looking forward to complete the next few pieces, which I've now planned in a way to give myself more freedom to play with!

The process steps for this one are quite interesting, and I think you will enjoy reading more on a different, less smooth going side of the drawing process. Thank you very much as always for your support!

Reminder: The july tutorial poll is still up, feel free to cast your vote if you have a preference, or make a suggestion.

Thank you for writing in so thoughtfully! There are definitely some problems with the wall tiles - there are really just some things better done in 3D. The wall tiles here aren't quite even warped into place properly because photoshop/my computer can't quite handle the sheer number of lines needing to be warped, so you're totally right in saying things look a bit off. Great suggestion with the increased reflectiveness as well - I think if I went for it I will probably take the lazy route and just show the most prominent highlights being reflected :) I don't think using 3d is cheating at all, it's definitely a skillset I need to start learning soon (at least in a very basic capacity)

this kinda feels like a "back to the roots" piece to me. it reminds me of some of the more innocent charachters you made earlier in your career. one little thing i found about the lighting, i think the curvature of the shadow thrown by the ceiling lights doesnt quite match up with the curvature of the tiles. also one thing that is propably very challenging that i am missing a bit here is more reflections. in my mind the wall tiles in subway stations always carry a lot of glossy reflections of the light sources and brighter lit objects in the scene. a subway station with very rough tiles wich do not reflect in such a way should be possible, but seem a little unusual to me. as far as i know the reflectiveness of the stationwalls is an intentional choice by the architect to make an otherwise claustrophobic underground space feel a little bigger. but i dont even know where to start, figuring out how exactly the reflection would look like with this curved wall. i guess since i know how to do 3d stuff i would just make a quick model in sketchup with lights and pbr materials and raytrace it from the same perspective and then basically use the raytraced picture with its shadows and reflections and perspective like a direct photo reference for the illustration. but thats kind cheating right? haha.

Been a long time fan of your work and had the awesome opportunity to fund your book. Just wish I was able to get the signed version! I sent you a message but haven't received a reply, please let me know the best way to contact you!

Thank you! That's not exactly true though, I think viewer's first impressions can still hold a lot of value; sometimes I can get really lost in figuring out parts of a piece, but end up not quite achieving the impact I was hoping for. So I'm actually quite happy when people do give their first impressions, even when it's unfiltered or once in a while a tiny bit rude :)

Love it! Great stuff as always! As someone completely devoid of artistic talent, there is little I can offer in the way of constructive criticism. All I can say is keep doing what you're doing, I've yet to see you post something I'm not at awe with. ^_^

Thank you for the kind words and thoughtful writeup as always! I definitely think the cigarette could be improved, sadly it's often one of the last elements I sharpen up so usually I'm pretty tired by the time I get to it. Though one of these days I definitely will muster the energy to go all out for a piece :)

Thank you :)

Thank you, it was a tough one to tackle!

Excellent composition. The effect of depth is particularly well done with the subway tunnel, the lighting is also well done, with notably the reflections on the heroine's hair. I love the black cat, which looks at the melancholic girl. The choice of colors is relevant, and the scene suggests that it is late at night, that no one goes out at that time, perhaps even that a subway will never pass. I'll just point out here a little recurring problem - but you know me now, I look at the details until the end: the cigarette is more successful than usual but it still lacks that impression that it is lit. In other words, a little smoke effect, and some ash on the end (a little bit more gray area, like the ash). Given the expression on her face, she could even be blowing smoke, which would accentuate the effect of melancholy, or exasperation. It all depends on what you mean here. Apart from these tiny details, it's absolutely brilliant, as always. You should be proud of this work! Well done!

It looks great! I really like the lighting in this one. I think you captured the environment really well.
