Dark Room (Full-res + Process Steps)

Continuing the fancy venue setting from the recent works! It was a bit tough figuring out the backdrop for this piece, but in the end I found a simple wall (with fancy wallpaper) worked well enough, especially how it reinforces the right to left lighting setup. I also found that red complemented the scene surprising well setting up a dimmer mood without compromising on impact.

As always, feel free to let me know what you think below!

No worries, I'm glad the explanation is helpful! I should emphasize that all the stages of the process in a sense only exist to serve as stepping stones for the end result, so I wouldn't recommend getting too attached or committed to the grayscale sketch. For myself, you can see I always start adding color while the BW sketch is still very rough, the reason being that the BW stage has already served its purpose in forecasting/proofing some bigger ideas like lighting setup, shapes/movement, etc. I really don't think there is a magic practice routine other than to directly tackle what you find the most challenging head on, and generate personalized solutions to the obstacles in your way. All the best!

Thanks for revisiting the coloring stage with chroma in mind in the explanations! It's kind of hard for me to wrap my head around as I see the black and white values as a commitment and breaking them up again feels like a step back from my initial composition. It's a really difficult learning curve for me, putting the theoretical knowledge about values, composition, lighting and color to practice without loosing control. I usually notice pretty clearly when I stop knowing what I'm doing and that's when frustration kicks in. Do you maybe have some practice routine in mind that I could follow for a while so that the process becomes more controllable? Regardless of course, thanks you for mentioning this step again in this process. I think it's incredible how dedicated you are to helping your community here. This has been the absolute best investment of €5 a month in years 😭😄. All the love!

Wow I love the red light

Mostly just a standard round brush to keep things simple, with some leaf brush for the BG and plus a bit of texture using the brush I just shared yesterday :)

Thanks as always for taking the time of day to engage with the piece! It does look a little bit incomplete now that you have mentioned the glove, perhaps a small revision is in order! As for the cigarette, I did not quite intend it to be lit at the moment so it will stay as it as :)

Another beautiful illustration! The lighting is superb, the lace on the underwear is very refined and precise (the reflections are very successful), the expressions of the faces is a perfect success and the pose is very interesting. Just two small details - since you are a perfectionist: why the hand on the shoulder has no glove (although it would not be seen otherwise) and the cigarette seems a bit sloppy (blurred and no smoke - while it would stand out well with the black background of the garment). But otherwise it's fantastic, well done!
