April Q&A

Thank you again for another month of support, here is this month's Q&A!
(Youtube link for those with video troubles)

I think a lot of the questions you guys have been sending in are great, it's a bit of a shame that even in verbal form there is still a lot of nuances that I couldn't touch on given the time. In the end, I hope this is at least a little bit helpful!

If you would like to send in a question for next month, feel free to leave it below in the comments. To limit the numbers, questions are for Patrons only, thank you!

Thank you! this has been really helpful.. my question for the next Q&A is; how to accurately capture the color of the subject (explaining value, saturation and hue) Thank!

Whats a good way to learn anatomy?

Hey Guweiz, I really liked this video a lot! It was very clear and I especially found the reference use part to be very useful! I would love to hear you talk about some tips for "Self-learning" someday! For example did you put a X amount of time a week into figure drawing, photo studies  etc... Or was there not really a schedule? Anyways, thank you so much! I really enjoy those videos and your book is absolutely the most important item in my bookshelf! Cheers!

really liked the vedio, i wanted to ask a sort of intermediate question, i like your brush work and few other artists how to practice that so that my shapes blend nicely seems like my question has answer itself but still would love any advice on that, this was the main reason i was asking for old pieces of yours with organic bg to study the brush work and shapes on things like heavy clothing and rocks.

Enjoyed the video and it really helped clear up my doubts about my own layer use, one thing I’ve always wished there were more of was videos of how you went about adding rain or snow and making it interact with the character. I’ve watched that old Greyhound video on YouTube thousands of times at this point and it’s still amazing to see how well the rain began to affect the character as you approached completion. One other thing I’d love to hear about is how you go using the grids to make sure your work has depth. I think I’ve been trapped trying to break out of flat drawings by using more dynamic poses but I still think it’s something else I’m missing so I’d love more on that!

Hello Guweiz, nice artwork as always!, I see you're really good at controlling your values, I am still really confused about how you are able to control subtle halftone values especially in the face. Even a very small change can affect how natural it will look, do you have any tips on how to paint these subtle, less obvious values in?

Hey Guweiz, it's really cool to see the process of one of my all time favourite artists! I do feel like something is missing, I might be wrong, but you seem to work a lot with reference material and it would really great to see that part as well. I think that in general reference, mood board etc topic is poorly explained and really for some reason higher level artists avoid showing in their process even though it might be one of the most crucial parts of illustration. Thank you!

My biggest question would be, how do you keep yourself consistent with drawing and posting and how do you handle slumps? I personally get very easily demoralised with my art and suffer artblocks which last over months. What motivates you to draw and how often do you draw?

Good day, GUWEIZ! I have been wondering if ever, will you make fundamental exercises and tutorials?

When you first began educating yourself on values, (specifically materials with various reflective properties, such as chrome), how did you go about studying them? Do you have any personal recommendations for those struggling with this? Cheers!

That is a great question. There are 2 parts to the answer! In short, by setting the value of the color you apply to 50, it will affect value minimally. Secondly, sometimes it actually is appropriate to alter the values a little to suit the color. (Different colors have maximum chroma at different values, for example red's maximum is at about 50) I will go a bit more in depth in the Q&A though!

GUWEIZ

Hey, for the next Q&A I was wondering... when you add color to your pieces with a soft light layer, doesn't that, by definition of the layer mode, screw with the values that you initially set up in black and white? How do you make sure that doesn't happen? Isn't it kind of contradictory to set up values and then add color with a mode that changes them? That's something I always struggle with when I try to replicate that workstyle. It doesn't lead to satisfactory results when I try it for that reason, I believe. Is there something I'm not thinking of? Thanks for the Q&As btw, they're a great format!

Thank you for the question!

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the question!

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the question! There are definitely nuances on how to begin depending on different circumstances, but as a short answer for now I think it's always helpful to just spend more time with what you want to do.

GUWEIZ

Two books I have read which had the most impact was Framed Ink and Color and Light (I have not done a lot of academic study into anatomy), although I think 90% of progress in the end is really putting the knowledge/basics to practice.

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the question! Hotkeys help a lot with momentum indeed and I will be happy to share more on them.

GUWEIZ

Hello, I was wondering if there are any books you used to learn stuff like anatomy, lighting and composition. I love your works and really like how you draw/ paint the body.

Hi ! Following your work for a long time but just subscribed to your patreon, you'r legit my favorite artist out there ! I was wondering if you could do a video someday about what shorcuts you are most using in your drawing process on photoshop, i'm still learning and I see you use tools that I have no idea about in your videos so it would be very helpfull to learn a bit more about what photoshop as to offer !

Wow! thanks for the feature. I'm really happy haha. Anyway, my next question would be "how to render materials or guide to show material information". I always end feel like my drawings are really smooth. Thank you again :)

If it helps, there is also a youtube link if you would like to use Youtube's auto translate ! (it takes a few days for it to process so it might not be available right now)

GUWEIZ

I'm not good at English so I'm grateful for the timestamps

The Vimeo page doesn't seem to work here. It says it can't find the Vimeo page.

Awesome man! I have a question. I know this can vary for complexity of different pieces but generally speaking on average how long does it take for you to complete a a piece? I've been getting work but it always takes me a while to finish a single illustration, from a hourly rate this can look quite abysmal. But if I lower the hours the quality drops quite a bit.

Hi, just wanna ask how did you develop your career as an illustrator? What would be your advice to someone who want to do do Illustration full time?
