City (Process steps + Full-res)

Sometimes doing a comfort-zone composition can be deceivingly easy at first. Despite the relatively static and straightforward overall presentation (no complex layering of elements, difficult camera angle), it actually took me a bit to figure out how exactly to show the "nuance" of the pose. At first the character felt too relaxed and the camera angle created a not-so-good silhouette, so I had to do some adjusting to make thing read a bit more clearly.

It ended up quite a bit more challenging than I expected, and not as exciting of an image, but I think there is still great value as a learning experience. Read more in the process steps!

Thank you very much, I'm happy that you find the process useful! Just in case you would like to Google Translate the text for the process, I have a .txt file attachment for the words in every process step :)

Hi Guweiz, I am very glad you returned to Patreon, I love your work. Your process has helped me a lot. I don't have much money But I will try to support you forever. Even though my English is not that good. hahaha (I am using Google Translator)

I'm afraid this month's video will be on another piece/topic :)

GUWEIZ

Amazing as always!

Hey Guweiz, are you going to make a video for this?

Thank you :) I felt it was a bit too hard to inject nuance into the profile view during the process, so I opted for a more straightforward presentation this time, it is something I need to work more on!

GUWEIZ

Thank you for the question, it's a very good one :) Of course as you guessed, it's normal to assemble a collection of reference images for every piece. Personally I chanced upon this practice just looking for references on new works normally one at a time, until I realised I could just slap them all together on one .psd file and pull them up when needed. (So do keep in mind I don't have any formal education in preparing proper mood boards, etc and my boards are just a collection of whatever I happen to google or have in my reference folders) However, I think reference use is, as you said, often crucial to achieving the best results, so I do plan to have a proper video to talk about this topic.

Hey Guweiz, it's really cool to see the process of one of my all time favourite artists! I do feel like something is missing, I might be wrong, but you seem to work a lot with reference material and it would really great to see that part as well. I think that in general reference, mood board etc topic is poorly explained and really for some reason higher level artists avoid showing in their process even though it might be one of the most crucial parts of illustration. Thank you!

It's very interesting to see that you changed the pose of the character in the middle of the creation process. Indeed, the profile view would have prevented us from reading the facial expressions but it would have accentuated the mystery while the cigarette added some blues. We could also wonder what she was looking at, and that would have added some questions. I like both versions actually, each one has its qualities. Nevertheless, I completely understand your choice and the result is really up to it! Congratulation !

Mickaël Gil

That's part of the process sometimes :) Ironically it's the familiar type of works in which we can see the most mistakes, making it harder to finish!

GUWEIZ

Looks great man! I agree sometimes you think you're going for a nice easy ride on a piece but it ends up be becoming way much more than what you bargained for! Nice for a challenge but not what's you expected. Either way the end result looks great

Love it!
