my body
has seen more than a body should

it has seen violence
it has seen ecstasy
it has seen everything in between

it has seen things
it’s too scared to remember

my body
has seen pain
it has convulsed and shaken
trying to find somewhere to put it
trying to bear a level of agony
that was just too heavy
to hold still

my body
has seen betrayal
by someone who was supposed to love me
who waited
until it was just empty enough
to take what they wanted

my body
has seen its soul try to run away
try to skip town
without my consent
it felt too foreign to stay that day
but someone who loves me
helped bring it back home
by counting backwards from 10 with me
over and over

my body
has seen neglect
by those who never meant to
who writhe under the weight of the guilt
who would do anything to take it back
who didn’t understand
the deep grooves brutality leaves

my body
has also seen these things
inflicted by its own hand

it has seen more than a body should
and it will see more
