Speaking of cat day, apparently it was established in Japan in 1987 by a committee of cat lovers and the Japanese Pet Food Association. I was told that the anniversary was established at the height of the pet boom, which does make sense with even today cats are as popular as dogs.

If you're wondering why it's Feb 22th in Japan then it's simply due to the Japanese word for the cat's cries is "nyan" and the word for 2 is "ni" which makes Feb 22th sounds like "Nyan nyan nyan".
