He signed her to her first record label and sold her out to Scooter Braun behind her back. Like obvs the song could be about her team in general/Scooter Braun too, like the betrayal in general. But it seems obvious it's about someone she was close with, and then betrayed her - i.e Scott.

But I just got to the mirrorball part where you said "I need her to make a music video" and (I know you watched Long Pond Studio Sessions a long time ago already) I think you'd really like watching that part of LPSS again. Before they perform it, she talks about the concepr and how she pictured it in her mind. Sounded pretty similar to what you were saying. And it's always cool when you see that you really did understand what she was saying

When he decided to sell the label, he sold her discography too, even though she wanted to buy it, and they had talked about it many times. I think her childhood friend had a father who was abusive (emotionally or physically), because of what she sings in the bridge: "And I've been meaning to tell you I think your house is haunted Your dad is always mad and that must be why And I think you should come live with me And we can be pirates Then you won't have to cry Or hide in the closet" That very much seems (to me) to be Taylor's childhood perspective of trying to understand why her friend's dad is always mad, which makes her friend cry and hide in the closet. A child, especially one with an imagination like Taylor's, might cope and process that situation by attributing the father's anger and her friend's fear to ghosts. She wants her friend to live with her, so that they can have fun and fantasize together. It's just such a lovely way of saying that children don't understand the reasons or motivations for their adults' behavior, and in Taylor's case, she imagined that it had to be ghosts. It's brilliant and sweet and sad.

To know TS is to know how much her work means to her, and how seriously she takes her craft. To lose control of her masters was everything, so while she sings with passion and uses lyrics that make it seem like she’s singing about a previous love, she’s channeling the feelings of losing her ultimate love, the love of her craft. The intensity of that love was more than just this song. It’s what has compelled her to work for countless hours to re-record and rerelease all of her prior work. That’s no small endeavor to undertake.

2024-08-03 01:49:07 +0000 UTCAn interesting music detail in Epiphany that reinforces the parallel between soldiers fighting in a war and healthcare workers fighting a war against covid--in the instrumental section right before the bridge "only 20 minutes to sleep" there is a single bugle playing. A single bugle is instrument that is used to play the song "Taps" at military funerals and memorials and the end of the day at military bases. The notes played in Epiphany aren't actually from Taps as that would be disrespectful, but it is an instrumental reference to it. Then there is a bookend to that idea with the sound of the heart monitor at the end, which is sort of the last "instrument" that is playing at the end of someone's life. Great example of the little details Taylor has in her music.

He sold her music (which she knew could happen, it happens to a lot of artists) but he sold them to someone she hated. (Scooter) Scott made a lot of statements making it sound like she was unreasonable. His statements made him look bad and made people even more sympathetic to Taylor. (If I'm on fire, you'll be made of ashes too) Scooter Braun also bad mouthed her and got aome of his clients to taunt her on IG. Taylor decided to fight the sale (I didn't have it in myself to go with grace? but ultimately wasn't able to prevent the sale. She decided to get back at them by saying she'd re-record all of her stuff which she could do because she was the writer or co-writer on every song. Scooter said she'd never do it. She did. They hurt her, but it all came back and hurt them too. (tears ricochet) it's continued to hurt them. Re-releasing her work de-valued the masters that Scooter owned. Broadcast and streaming services pledged to only play Taylor's version. She was also able to change legal terms for artists and how their contracts could be structured. (more tears are ricocheting!) Scooter lost money on the deal and eventually his clients left and he recently announced he wasn't going to be managing artists anymore.

I cry for my family members who served in the military during combat as well as my coworkers who work in hospitals/nursing homes during covid- when she spoke about holding hands through plastic and “doc I think she’s crashing now”. That especially hits me since my mom died during covid and I could only see her from the outside of her nursing home window. Many never recovered from those traumas.

2024-08-01 23:52:41 +0000 UTCthe “curve became a sphere” line is so crazily deep because it shows burnout so well. she was so ahead of a curve that she made it back around to the beginning and fell behind because she was struggling to keep up. as someone who was pushed to be “ahead of the curve”, this line hits hard because it shows that being constantly pushed to be ahead of everyone else will eventually catch up to you and have you burning out and struggling to keep up, as she defines when she says “fell behind all my classmates and i ended up here”. it’s just so crazy that she can make metaphors like this.

I think parts could fit to scooter as well but the fact that it’s a deeper sadness makes me feel it was more personal and she never had a trusting or any kind of relationship with scooter but she did with her label “It was her home for so many years” for like 13 or something
