Chapter 69 (nice)

After practicing my new communication skill all night, I was starting to be able to “say” proper words! It was still a little rough, and it wasn’t quite as deep as my mental voice was, but it was still better than having to force a mental connection to strangers. After the fiasco with the elves, I wasn’t as willing to trust others with access to my mind as I was before.

And, unfortunately, here come some strangers to practice on. I was hoping to get a bit more practice by myself...

Chapter 68

Lightning Magic was a lot harder to aim than I thought it would be.

As I charged up the bolt of crackling electricity in my hands, I imagined ensuing destruction happening in a generally forward direction from my current point of view. But when I released my hold on the magic, it shot forward for a few feet before dropping sharply to hit the ground and disperse harmlessly, though it did cost me quite a few burnt roots even with my Fire Resistance. The o...

Chapter 67

“Very good! Add more mana to the spell structure, it should make the flames even hotter!”

I called out tips to the mage-golems whenever I could to help them improve their magic and be better at their jobs. From the moment we first started this exercise, bursts of magic power could be seen all around the expanded clearing. In areas where it wasn’t seen, it could be felt.

After what felt like days of practice, the first golem mage, the only one with a humanoid body, informed m...

“Okay, now that only I can use magic around here, it’s time I set some magical defenses.”

I went up to my branches and created a new acorn, one that had Earth Magic and Water Magic as its two skills. I made sure it had a militaristic mindset and viewed me as its general, and gave it a very territorial personality. Once I felt that it would work as planned, I gave it the nutrients to grow, then popped it into a custom-made puppet. The puppet I made...

“My second Epic skill! Woohoo!”

I was about to open the skill description before I stopped and realized that no, this wasn’t my second Epic skill. This was my third!

In my rush after finally gaining the Golem Creation skill, I had forgotten that the previous skill/upgrade points were refunded and went towards Mana Condensation. I still haven’t read the new description yet, though.

“First, Dryad Creation, t...

Chapter 64

Before I go any farther, I should figure out what exactly this golem of mine can do. I gave him a few minutes to get used to his body and make the changes he wanted to before giving him some basic exercises. When he was done with the sprints, I used Identify on him.

The cycle of golem development continued for quite a while, only interrupted when I had to take time to find more cores to experiment with. Thankfully, BBW and his pack have been leaving plenty of orc remains for me to fund my research with.

They have been hunting orcs as their primary food sou...

Chapter 62

First things first, I need to recover the core.

During the explosion of my first semi-successful golem prototype, its limbs were ripped from the torso, which was also broken into several pieces. Frankly, the whole thing would be just as useful as mulch now.

I searched the debris for the precious monster core, but I found it almost a hundred feet away from where the golem blew up. Unfortunately, though, it had a large crack running down the middle. As soon as I tried to pick it up ...

Sorry!

Patreon changed the way stuff gets posted while I was gone. I guess I didn't do it right when I scheduled the post to drop. I hope this is the only mistake going forward. Sorry bout that!

It's weird because I got notifications of people liking the post, and one of my subscribers even said he got the full post in his email when I scheduled it on saturday night. I'll do my best to double check that it gets posted correctly from now. Hope you all enjoy the chapter :)

Chapter 61

“Soo, that happened.”

Silvan said to her partner. They had been riding in mostly silence for the last few days, heading back to the elven forest nation, they’re only conversation being “pass the water” or “hand me the dried nuts”. It’s been tense while they process the biggest failure of their career.

“That it did,” replied Elowen. “We were nowhere near prepared for how advanced Willow, the Great Tree, was. Not only was his mind more complex than one his age ...

Chapter 60

It’s been 5 weeks since I ran Elvis and Silvan out, and quite frankly, I don’t feel like I’ve done enough since then.

I spent a couple of days growing a crap ton of vines throughout the portion of the forest I control. In fact, almost every tree that was under my influence got a makeover. I grew out their hair (vines are now all over the place), they all got pedicures (roots got reorganized and thickened), and everyone got some new clothes (I reinforced the trunks with iron by fus...

Redo of a Dungeon Core - Chapter 2

“A non-sentient dungeon creature will follow their master’s orders to the letter. If you were to tell a skeleton monster you summoned to remove its left arm, it would. If you tell a wolf you summoned to kill itself, it would follow your orders. The issue with order obedience comes with intelligence, or rather, sapience.

A monster summoned with sapience has the potential to disobey your commands. They will mostly follow basic commands, of course, but there is still the potential of d...

“What do you mean ‘take me despite my protest’? How could you?”

I bore down on Silvan with the full weight of my mind while asking her that. So far, I had maintained a boundary of trying to stay out of people’s inner thoughts, but when something so important came to light, I found it necessary to be a little… pushy.

Taking a break

Billing is going to be paused for the month of August. I need a break from writing, as I'm starting to feel too pressured to write, taking the fun out of it for me. Don't worry, though. None of you should be charged for this month, with billing continuing in September.

I wanted to get 59 posted this week and 60 posted today, but I just didn't have the energy to finish. 59 is mostly done, but I can't get it done tonight. I'll do my best to get it posted by tomorrow night, but after that,...

Chapter 57

Elowen was up bright and early. He watched the sky change color through the woven vines that made up the roof. It hadn’t rained during their stay so far, but he wondered what Willow would do when it came to that.

Would he tighten the weave? Would he add a layer of dirt on top to make it waterproof? He could also grow a layered pattern of leaves on the vines of the roof to make a thatched pattern. Then again, he could probably use Water Magic to c...

Chapter 56

I ended up relaxing for the night, opting to take some time off of the projects I had lined up. The last couple of weeks had been non-stop work, work, work, and I needed a break, break, break.

Given it was night time, I basked in the glow of the moonlight, absorbing what energy I could from the beautiful rays. In my branches rested a pair of birds that had been hanging around me lately, and one of them was awake right now.

I made a connection between the two of us and sent a reque...

Redo of a Dungeon Core - Chapter 1

“To start with, there are three ways to summon a creature. The first way is to just summon it like normal. To do this, you open the summon tab and select the creature you want to summon. All Dungeon Masters start with a few basic monsters and a few basic critters. Each creature has its own assigned cost that must be paid to summon the monster.

The second way to summon a creature is to summon a spawner. A creature’s spawner cost is 10 times the base summoning cost of that creature. H...

Second Story Announcement!

As was previously posted, i am hoping to start a second story. For now, it will be a Patreon exclusive story, but I will be eventually posting it to Royal Road once I get a few chapters ahead here. The chapters will be posted when I get a chance to write them, and it will NOT interfere with the weekly Tree chapter.

That being said, the winner of the poll to determine what the new story will be is...

Sun’s out, guns out. Time to crush something.

I looked around for something large that I can try to make smaller and found the answer in my canopy.

As I’ve been growing larger, the Resource Berries I made so long ago have grown with me. The health berries started off looking like regular cherries, but now they were much larger, about the size of an apple. It looks aesthetically right for the health berries, but the blue mana berries just look weird be...

Chapter 54

Of course, the random ass elves just happen to have exactly what I need in their literal back pocket. Well, front pocket, but whatever.

I watched as the male of the two elves – Elvis? whatever his name was – reached into one of the many folds of the very cliché fantasy cloak he had on and pulled out an acorn. He had a goofy grin on his face, and I could tell that he was pleased with himself, but I don’t see how a nut is going to help.

Elvis turned and walked back t...

Chapter 53

Elowen took in the sights as he walked through the woods. The vegetation was dense here, much more so than what should be normal for a forest in the human kingdoms. He assumed that had to be a side effect of the Great Tree living here.

Elowen sent a small pulse of mana through one of the trees as he passed by on instinct. The pulse went through the tree’s trunk up to its canopy, down to its roots, and back to him. This showed him that the tree was growing quite nicely, though its bran...

New Project!

I'm looking to expand the posts I have on Patreon and start writing more stories. Since I'm doing less violence with Willow, I want the freedom to get a bit more aggressive in a different story, as that's what I enjoy reading and writing.

This side story will take second place to "So I'm a Tree", but it will be a way for me to prevent burn out as well. I love Willow, but there's other things I enjoy writing!

Vote on what the next story should be! I have a couple ideas of my own, ...

Chapter 52

And thus ends the Laughing Viper arc. I hope you all enjoy :)

Elowen rested his head against the carriage wall, watching as the human city drifted by. It had been a long journey here, and he was already ready to be out of the city yet again and back to the forest. It was stereotypical of the elven race to hate human cities, but Elowen found that stereotypes existed for a reason. The cities were so… dirty. Even more so than the literal dirt of the forest.

Elowen raised his...

Chapter 51

As the Laughing Viper trio went to sleep, I got to work on the safe haven I promised to make. I was considering making a wooden palisade of sorts out of my roots, but I feel like that would take too much time and stamina and would be too permanent. Instead, I’ll make it a basic rock wall.

I took a large amount of dirt from a few feet under the clearing and used that to make the wall. Doing it this way would also allow me to enlarge the small tank I was using to store the mana water wh...
