I remember luffy once said that he just use gear 3rd for 5 minutes, so he said he need to wait for 5 minutes for him to be back to normal size from the chibi size. I think he said it during the fight with luccy? So the longer he use the gear 3rd, the longer the recovery time.

It def doesn't always work out how he envisioned it, but he is pretty good at improvisation (also insanely lucky). Both him and Mr. 3 have healthy selfpreservation instincts, so... His dilemma is pretty funny too: To stick with Luffy and use him as bodyguard, or leave him behind coz he's a danger magnet, that's the question.
