So to answer your question. YES people are dying. Censorship was more prevalent at the beginning of HxH since when the show started, it began at an earlier time-slot, so it had to be censored. However as the show progressed, it got changed to a much later time-slot, thus it freed the producers to using less censorship. The HxH manga is actually very gory, and darker compared to the anime at this point
