So, Kuma's a hardened bastard, literaly and figuraively, but at 14:43, he couldn't stop himself from feeling even a little bit afffect by that hearbreaking display from Luffy. Ngl, that by itself, even if it's just a interpretative stretch by myself, kinda broke my heart as well... Freaking iconic episode... Wtf, Oda-sensei... T-T

that is the most realistic fucking breakdown scene I've ever seen in anime.

I think the biggest thing is you're now seeing a huge power gap between the Warlords. You have Crocodile and Moria, who got wrecked, but then you have people like Kuma and Mihawk who could've killed all of them in a moment.

Yeah, next arc is seriously the start of the shitstorm. Remember they never dropped the Ace being captured plotline. That isn't something that's gunna be brought up in a million years.

Loving how you feel like there's so many questions in your mind about what's next. That's really one of the things that makes One Piece so great, there isn't a clear predicable storyline ahead. Even where the manga is right now, people are still asking themselves so many questions, without spoiling, things like where the next arc would be, who the final villain really is etc etc. Always room to be surprised by plot twists!

fun fact they've only been traveling for a month or 2 at this point in the story, east blue was a week, alabasta saga was about a week, skypeia was 3 days, water 7 was about 4 days thriller bark was one long night, and sabaody is maybe the next day or a week later and about 3 days of travel between each. so brook met them got saved and now watched another crew perish a week later

Actually their intention WAS to run, they just had to fight to both prevent their teammates from getting eliminated and to have a chance to get away (not that they were effective in either). And Kuma knew what he was doing would have serious repercussions as the Navy wouldn't stand idly by and let one of their warlords actively prevent them from dealing with a notorious pirate group (Kaizu practically said as much), especially since the Celestial Dragons are practically demanding them to do just that. Therefore, when he was saying to Luffy "We will never see each other again" what he really meant was "I will never see you again." Hope that helps

Unfortunately, a lot of reactors watch this episode feeling little to no stakes. At least in your case you had reason to based on your observations, nice job btw, but most just are like, “lol nothing bad will happen there’s 600 more episodes to go”
This chapter in one piece’s history was a very scary one for fans when it was being published lol
