Regarding what you were saying about the inner thoughts of the characters, it might interest you to hear that Oda actually intentionally doesn't let you see Luffy's thoughts in the manga. If he ever has a thought bubble, it just says "...". The only instance I can think of where you see words in a Luffy thought bubble was in the place of speech when he literally couldn't talk (I believe he was underwater). Apparently Oda is very purposeful about this because he considers Luffy a man of action, which I take to mean that if the thought has crossed his mind he's probably already done or said it, lmao. I think a very good example of this is the incident we see here when he steals Arlong's teeth XD

I couldn't agree more, I greatly prefer subs that choose not to translate "nakama". It's especially striking when Luffy uses the word "tomodachi", which is a good translation for friend, because he places a very different meaning in each word. He will call acquaintances they meet from island to island "tomodachi", but he reserves "nakama" for mainly his crew (with a few notable exceptions). These are people who would die for him, and that he would die for without a second thought, and that share a common purpose and/or ideology. Although the word "nakama" doesn't inherently imply all of that, it does for our main cast. Which is one of the reasons I hate seeing it simplified to "friend", which really fails to capture the complexity and often ends up just sounding childish.

I feel like Nami fighting has sort of a neat arc she goes through over a longer time, but its obviously not something I can go into without spoiling. But here I'll just say that I agree with everything you said about Nami trusting the others to fight for her.

I get the desire to see Nami give Arlong some good punches. I do. But there’s a reason that doesn’t happen. This arch is about Nami giving up control and learning to trust Luffy. Since meeting to this point, it’s been building. This is why I love this arch so much. She doesn’t have to carry the burden anymore, she realizes now that her worries can be carried by her new friends.
For eight years she’s been fighting alone to save her village. The villagers didn’t tell her that they knew that whole time, to not pressure her. Which had good intentions but isolated Nami completely except from Nojiko. Trust me when I say that there will be more opportunities for Nami later :)

The dub plays it more like Arlong is mocking Luffy when he says that Nami is his "friend." and I actually like that a bit better.

No, sometimes Vimeo's servers are slow, dont have it on auto, just try 720p and 540. The problem doesnt seem to last too long, but i might need to do that change it back and try HD a little while.

Yeah I cringe everytime I see them use the word friend, when they are really saying Nakama. There are translations out there that leave the word "nakama" in the subs. It's a very meaningful word in the series that doesn't really have an English translation. It's very close to "comrade", or in the context of the series, it's like a a partner in a journey whose bonds are stronger than family. Arlong uses the word nakama mockingly while to Luffy it's something very close and personal to him.

The reason Arlong seems to be using the word friend weirdly has to do with the Japanese word being translated as friend. The word in Japanese is Nakama, which is hard to translate as it doesn't have an exact translation to English. From what I've read it means something along the lines of "Someone you work together with closely", so it is a more broad term than Friend. I think they went with friend since it fits the way Luffy uses the word, but it does sound weird the way Arlong uses it.

I love Luffy's self awareness. He knows his own faults, but but rather than seeing them as weaknesses, he sees them as the areas where his friends can help him, and he in turn can help them with the things he is good at. Despite his simple mindedness, Luffy has a good sense of people, so I think he recognizes that covering for each others weaknesses is something that makes his crew's bond stronger, even if he doesn't really put it into as weighty words as that.
