Yes, and the depressing backstories continue with "Sanji got shipwrecked and nearly starved to death, and Zeff gave up his leg to save him." Others have mentioned that in the manga he actually ate his leg, but I remember the first time I watched the anime, I kind of inferred that was the case anyway, even though they cut it out. If Zeff gave Sanji all the food, he had to have eaten something, right?

Zeff calls Sanji "chibi nasu" which for some reason is getting translated as "little brat" which isn't too far off, but the affectionate subtext of the pet name is lost, because when LITERALLY translated, chibi nasu means "little eggplant".

Sanji's backstory with Zeff is amazing and sad., they could have mentioned that Zeff ate his own cut-off leg to survive....but i understand that would be too much for kids. Oda is the greatest storyteller...Great reaction please try and avoid being spoiled.

No it’s not. You just have to not show it. Like, you could show him saving Sanji without cutting his leg off. Then, from there on, everything is the same as it was before, just he still has a leg, until the big reveal. We then see Zeff’s bloody leg and then it’s talked about. You don’t have to animate anything.

I love character development and seeing the backstories too. They really are well written and no two are the same. This one really does help you understand why Sanji cares so much about wasting food and wants to help anyone hungry.

Also i wanna just point out for a future if you ever notice but since this show is long there will be VA changes due different reasons. Mostly due the orginal va just passing away. For Instance i think the orginal Hawk-Eye voice was just in the zoro fight ep. due him passing away shortly after :s

It's the other way around. You can live more than a month without food, but only maybe a week without water.

lol, I am sure many of us came here to describe this. he give sanji all the good and eats his own leg to survive on the island.

to answer your question yes in the real world zeff would be dead. but in the original story zeff did not lose his leg saving sanji , he cut it off and ate in the rocky island in order to survive! was too graphic to animate that.

Zeff survived because in the manga he ate his own leg the anime censored that because it's too much for PG 13
