Also thought that flutes and recorders are the same, however, after a search from reliable Google, the main difference is with the playing position, (the way you play it and hold it). The recorder is played vertically, pointing down and the flute is played horizontally, held out to the side. Flutes will be held out to the right, regardless of whether you are left handed or right handed.
