Important information regarding patches

I have some important information regarding the future of the Patreon version of Being a DIK.

The best way to go forward with the game is by uploading patches as well as a full game, including all episodes. The old idea of keeping multiple binaries on Patreon will make my workload much bigger since it makes it too different from how the Steam version is being handled.

Patches are still small files and they will enable faster download of new content, which was problem I wanted to solve to begin with.

An example of how it would work

When episode 5 is released I will release the following:

1. One big game file with Episodes 1-5 (v0.5.0), approximately 8 GB

2. One smaller patch with just Episode 5 (v0.5.0), approximately 2 GB

If you have the previous version installed (v0.4.0, v0.4.1 or v0.4.2), you can just download option number 2 and patch the game.

If you don't have the previous version, you'll need to download option number 1.

What do you need to do now?

Nothing! Absolutely nothing.

Your saves from episode 4 will work without any extra steps required on your end.

Please note, Steam saves aren't compatible with the Patreon version.

Patch v0.4.2

If you want the latest bug fixes, today I have uploaded:

1. One big game file with Episodes 1-4 (v0.4.2) Get it here

2. One smaller patch that can be used on v0.4.0 or v0.4.1 to upgrade your game to v0.4.2. Until episode 5 is released, as thanks for reaching 4000 patrons this patch will be available for free to all patrons.  Get it here

The upside to all of this is that you can keep all content in one single game and patches will be fast to download.

The biggest con to this is that I can only release patches to the $5 tier, because the big file with all episodes must be kept in the $10 tier because of the Steam release. You will still be able to play the new updates with the patch. But you do have to save the previous version between updates to make this work.

Another con is that if you have modified the game or used a software to extract images, scripts etc., you need to delete those extra folders for the patch to work.

I'm deeply sorry for backpeddling on this and I'm sorry for all the confusion. It's better to make this change early on, than realizing that I screwed this up in a bigger way later. If you have any questions about this, please post a comment and I will answer as best as I can.

Best regards

I would have ended it as well, but as it appears both girls (Maya and Josy) are in the end episode summary and each have their own relationship points, it leaves me to believe that episode 4's conclusion with them could have diverging paths at some point depending on your choices. It might not be final with more of the game to come. We'll just have to wait and see. It would be interesting to see one girl or the other pick the MC over each other as a result of events and choices, but also, again, as it is not finished, given what might be planned with the story could have required a three-way relationship/friendship with them for where we are by the end of episode 4.

You just have to not be higher than a DIK...once you get Huge and Massive DIK then they wont choose to be in a relationship with you and just be with each other, but on the same note...to get the Jade scene at the end you cant go home with them

I think you mean Maya and Josy. It is possible depending on your choices to choose a "mutual" relationship with them where you date both of them and they date each other. I'm not completely certain of this but I believe to get that option you have to take the Chick route.

Laird Ruari

huh?

Ya, it's definitely a good move, regardless. 1GB or even 2GB patches versus an 8GB download is still a huge gain - way less bandwidth and time invested, so it's a great idea.

But your work is awesome, mate. I would have never thought I would finally be a Patreon someday and man, be sure I'm proud of it. Congrats!

So sad about the Maya and Alice situation. And sad I couldn't choose another option (I would have ended the relationship with both of them instead of chosing and friendship). I hope that's because this is going to generate new chances with both of them in future chapters.

The actual updates would be in the GB territory ofc, but small bug fixes would be ~20-100 MB, just for scripts and other minor things. Once everyone gets used to it, I think it will be appreciated.

DrPinkCake

This is good - this will be far more efficient for most folks and patching is relatively easy. Much rather download a 23MB patch that took 8 seconds to download than an 8GB package that would take a couple hours, lol. Good job.

I really thank you for being very transparent on this. Giving us your honest intentions is very admirable and very welcomed. I found this via Patreon and although I have Steam, I prefer Patreon as I enjoy supporting you and your project in this manner (but that is me). Thank you again for this update, and with the quality of the game and story (and the love for my girl, Sage) I will wait and pay as much as I have to. 😁

Doh, hadn’t noticed it, and kind of assumed it wasn’t there as a lot of games don’t show it

Julian Harper

Check the bottom right corner. It's been there since day 1. ;)

DrPinkCake

One thing that would be useful is if you made the version number obvious on the main screen of that game, that way you know instantly the version you have when you open it

Julian Harper

No problem doc, sounds like a workable solution

Julian Harper

Cheers, have no issue doing more run troughs as I love the story twists. And God know I wasn't even remotely suggesting multiple pipelines/branches for direct access vs steam. Not a monster!

Philip Metcalfe

Exactly. I hope that most patrons understand how to patch the game with the instructions I provided as well.

DrPinkCake

Patreon and Steam saves aren't compatible. If I allowed that, I would have to sort out bugs that would be nightmarish and take too much time. If you want to continue playing Episode 5 immediately at launch, download and play the v0.4.2 version and save at the end. Alternatively, you wait until Episode 5 is released and play the game from the beggining to the end.

DrPinkCake

So I found this game through Steam and then came here to through $ at hearing the next part of the story. At $10 tier is it suggested that I ignore my steam game and download directly (and playthrough again) if I want to patch Chapter 5 as soon as it's around?

Philip Metcalfe

It is much more logical to be like that. We will no longer need to download the entire game with every update. It's good👍
