You nailed why I just can't with any book that sells itself as a Zutara-esque EtL and then it ends up having like none of the nuance I would attribute to my OTP. I don't know Star Trek but the example you provided is really what the worst timeline would be like if the actress didn't put her foot down. I'm not a fan of Poppy War (I'm Chinese I'm allowed to dislike it) bc book 2 was just not doing it for me, but I'm glad people take away so much from it.

It's enemies to lovers oppressor+oppressed, and the main story arch is the oppressor coming to realize why her love interest, a member of a rebellion hired initially to kill her, is feeling and acting this way. It's gay, it's big feels, and the oppressor in this situation makes a sincere conscious effort to examine all the ways her status is causing harm and works, ultimately, for the resistance

2025-08-02 18:44:29 +0000 UTCI'm actually not an enemies to lovers fan. It's one of my least favorites kinds of plotlines. Specifically the kind that involves the two leads hating each other in the beginning. It's just gross to me. But that's a very personal opinion.
