Thank you for bringing up the indyref because that really gets left out of her story.

It kinda sucks that we can’t like and comment on Nebula. I wanna see everyone’s thoughts lol.

Keyon

Wow, this is amazing. Thank you.

There's an essay I read in college called "Muteness Envy." It made a point that has stuck with me for the past decade. Barbara Johnson is talking about gender (but also power in general) and she coins the phrase "the male two-step." "Far from being the opposite of authority, victimhood would seem to be the most effective model for authority, particularly literary and cultural authority. It is not that the victim always gets to speak--far from it--but that the most highly valued speaker gets to claim victimhood" An example she gives is the story of Apollo and Daphne, where the reader is encouraged to see the failed rape of Daphne as a "loss" for Apollo.

Re: Dumbledore being gay - the only time it's implied in the books is when Rita Skeeter's biography makes insinuations about his relationship to Grindelwald while also making insinuations about his relationship with Harry. So, gay people again only coming up in the text alongside insinuations of predatory behavior toward children

At the 43-43:30 min section: that's a fucking great point, Princess. Maybe it could be used against transphobes in another situation as well: why do they think a man would ever want to get rid of his privilegies and pretend to be a woman? I hope I'm not misconstruing what you said, it just hit me how baffling that transphobic logic really is.

og.monstr

Incredibly strong video! <3 I can't believe how many people still think JKR is ok and normal (I think most of them want to think that way too hard).

Charlotte KL

I don't blame people for being sad about giving up Harry Potter, but it's time to do that. Overdue in fact! Even if it was 100% non problematic, the fact she is now using her wealth and influence to persecute a minority should be enough to never give her money. Even if it "doesn't work", it'll show people you care about her impact on trans lives. It's a sacrifice, all boycotting is, but it is one that's needed. To paraphrase someone I saw on Mastadon talking about Neil Gaiman; Joanne made her own art toxic, that's on her. She took Harry Potter from the people who deserved to enjoy it. You can't control what you enjoyed in the past, but you can 100% let it go now. At the very least, don't give her anymore money.

Roz Mosis

Anytime the artist is still using their money to hurt the people I love, THEY DON'T GET MY MONEY. I don't understand why this is so hard for people!

J. Smith

WOW that PM never considering that trans men exist is a MOMENT. Embarassing

Dino

You're always putting out absolutely stellar content, but this one? Thank you for outlining all the reasons nobody should be supporting Joanne. And while I understand this video essay is focused on Potter, I'm going to sit one of my sisters down and have her watch this, because I just found a Robert Galbraith novel in her house. She "likes the story/TV series." (UUUUUGH!!)

Also HEAVY AGREE with hating how the trad wife aesthetic is trying to co-opt milkmaid fashion. I am just trying to live out my wench-fairy-witch-pirate-fantasy dreams!!! Let me just play and have fun outside of the male gaze PLEASE

Taylor Branch

Yeah I have no interest engaging with hp, in any manner (fanfics, tv, movies, gifting for others). Stop giving your money and time to people who actively work against you.

shamaamamamamaah

Oh I didn’t see that one!

Princess Weekes

Another book I might add to this conversation is "A Short History of Trans Misogyny" by Jules Gill-Peterson! I'm in the middle of your video so not sure if it's brought up but commenting now regardless lol

Taylor Branch

already went thru this via nebula and gotta say thank you so much for it. with the recent rollback of support for trans youth in the USA it feels more important than ever to recognize the real harm this woman does and that she publicly uses her material wealth to push her narrative in the UK that then sets a standard of behavior for the rest of the """modern developed""" world
