How 'The Last Duel' Failed Its Heroine

(or) Why The Last Duel Sucks?

Also, I just realized that Ridley Scott directed all the Adam Driver "sex scenes" in 2021.

In 2021 director Ridley Scott released two films House of Gucci and The Last Duel. Neither film performed spectacularly well, but while House of Gucci was always expected to live or die on the backs of Lady Gaga fans—The Last Duel grossing only 30 million against a budget of 100 million, was treated (along with the failure of The Northman in 2022) as an example of how audiences don't support "adult" movies. And the struggle of non-franchise movies during the COVID era. While neither film fully understood the assignment, I find the surprise surrounding The Last Duel's failure particularly interesting. I don't think people wanted to watch an old-timey rape trial, and it prompts an exciting conversation about the disconnect between what audiences show up for and what studios think they will show up for.

How 'The Last Duel' Failed Its Heroine

Im absolutely done with movies having rape scenes. ‘It happened in history’ is no longer a good excuse for anything since we as a society are trying to move past slut shaming, blaming women for rape, and working to empathize more with victims. If you absolutely have to have a rape in your movie do it off screen because at this point you’re just doing it for titilation *and everyone knows that.* Good video, alleviates any need to see it that I had. Totally need to see Woman King though!

The book sounds great. Thanks for your movie review, and I'm so sorry to hear the movie centred the two men (one of them being the rapist) instead of the woman, who was the rape victim. You're right in saying Margauerite's story is enough, we didn't need to hear the two men's perspectives, when the story should have been about her trauma only.

I remember watching this film and thinking it was a criminal misuse of the talents of Jodie Comer. How on *earth* is she all over the posters, the story is ABOUT her character and her perspective feels like a tacked on, much shorter story at the end. I remember telling my partner "Ooo let's watch this. Jodie Comer is brilliant" and expecting a tour de force of Comer brilliance only to be like "Well honey I guess I'll just show you the first season of Killing Eve." There was just so much damn Adam Driver...like...why? Anyway--I'm with you on this one 100%. And now I kind of want to read The Last Duel book.

I really enjoyed this commentary - putting things into perspective of why it doesn't work, but it could have.
