The Jealous Pop Idol Part 2
As the last flash of the stage lights and the crowd goes wild. Leia and Cody hit their high notes in harmony and the crowd roars with excitement. As the stage lights dim, Cody stares out at the crowd jumping and clapping widely.
Panting to try and catch his breath, he does his best to savour the moment. Swishing back the hairs that have fallen in front of his face, he can’t believe the reaction he’s received. He can’t believe just how much he’s enjoyed being a girl on stage.
The feel of his skirt and hair failing around as he danced was just incredible. He can almost feel the love from the crowd for his new feminine appearance.
It’s like a dream come true. Something he thought would never happen in his wildest dreams! He’s on stage with his sister as a sister act! For the first time ever on stage, he’s not felt like he’s in his sisters shadow. He feels like they are a team!
“Coby!” Leia shouts over the cheers of the crowd. “What a show!”
Still catching his breath, Coby looks down at his sweaty body and the tight feminine clothes clinging to him. He smiles wider than he ever has in the past.
What a moment! What a night!
Is this the start of something great! Is this his chance to be the person he wants to be! No longer in the shadow of his sister, but an icon in upon himself.
The stage lights go dark, Coby and Leia are ushered off the stage to incredible fanfare. Darby, their manager stands wanting off stage ready to congratulate them like he usually does. Or so that was Coby thought was going to happen.
As a stagehand passes Coby a towel to wipe the sweat from his face, Darby’s concerned expression becomes obvious. Coby notices Darby winching at his skimpy feminine outfit, like a disappointed father. It makes him instantly feel silly and drains his mood.
“Oh, My GOD!” Leia screeches, reaching for Coby’s hands.
Grabbing his hands tight, she jumps around in pure elation. Dancing all crazy in front of Coby, Leia waves both their arms up and down with excitement.
“They loved you!” Leia cheers, quickly embracing her brother. “They so totally loved you dressed like that!”
Coby gently smiles and laughs as Leia dances around. He couldn’t have imagined it going better! It fills him with joy that Leia is so excited, but at the same time he can see Darby’s indifferent expression.
“Leia, Coby,” Darby interrupts with a dour tone. “Great show tonight.”
“Darby!” Leia gripes, flicking her long hair around with an attitude. “It was our BEST ever show! Maybe sound more excited about my brother’s transformation! The crowd loved it!”
Forcing a smile, Darby scrolls on his phone for a moment, before frowning.
“No seriously,” Darby says, letting out a sigh. “It really was a great show, but maybe we should go talk in private about the repercussions of such a transformation?”
“R-percussions…?” Coby asks, feeling all to familiar fears boiling to the surface.
Darby places a comforting hand on Coby’s shoulders. They lock eyes for a moment before Darby gives him a reassuring smile.
“Let’s go talk privately,” Darby repeats, pointing for them to get off the stage. “I can barely hear myself over the crowd! They really are going wild chanting for a second encore that we don’t have time for!”
As they both agree to follow Darby back to the dressing rooms, Leia holds out her hand to hold Coby’s hand tight as they talk together. Coby’s kitten heels clacking on the hard backstage floor only remind him of the trouble he might find himself in Darby.
Entering Leia’s changing room, Leia rushes over to the drink fridge and grabs two bottles of water. Throwing one to Coby, Darby starts pacing anxiously around the room.
“So…,” Darby says with worry fills his voice. “Explain to me exactly why Coby is dressed as a girl!?”
Taking a long sip, Leia wipes her mouth and gives Darby an unimpressed look. “You still sound sad about this Darby,” she comments abruptly.
Stopping on the spot, Darby stressfully rubs his face. “I just want to understand how my most popular brother and sister team turned into a sister act. My boss is going to have questions about this sudden change in direction! Very hard questions.”
Feeling guilty about potentially getting everyone in trouble, Coby starts feeling as small as a mouse. Reaching up for his wig, he swipes it from his head and throws it down on a nearby counter. Instantly, Coby feels lost without the long hairs cascading down his face.
“My wardrobe team didn’t arrive,” Coby explains, kicking the ground in frustration. “That’s not our fault!”
“Imbeciles!” Darby grunts.
Coby then looks down at his yellow miniskirt and shows it off. “That’s why I’m wearing one of Leia’s outfits. We are lucky this one fit me.”
Darby steps closer to Coby and takes a moment to look him up and down.
“I see,” Darby replies, looking at the makeup adoring Coby’s face. “So you took matters into your own hands and dressed as a girl for the performance!? Did you not even consider the ramifications of your actions!?”
“Don’t talk to Coby like that!” Leia protests, chucking the bottle cap of the water bottle at Darby’s back. “We’ve just given what I think was our finest performance and you’re giving him crap! Coby basically saved the show and stop the crowd from turning ugly!”
“I don’t disagree it was a fine performance, Leia,” Darby promptly replies firmly. “
“So, what's the problem then!?” Leia screeches, stamping her foot. “Coby was happy to go out dressed in a skirt and heels! He shook that little booty like his life depended on it.”
Coby can’t help but smile and feel uplifted by his sister's words. For years he’s hidden this side of himself from her, worried what she might think—or say.
Obviously stressed, Darby rubs his face once more and lets out a long breath.
“You kids…,” he complains, slumping on a nearby chair. “You can’t just do what you want! The company pays for everything you do, and it won’t like this sudden change. It’s not to the plan!”
Coby lowers his head and stares at the kitten heels on his feet. He’s gone and got everyone in trouble, and he knows it.
“Why?” Leia asks, reaching up to put her hair into a ponytail. “We’re the stars here! Surely, it’s our decision!”
“No….,” Darby replies sourly, shaking his head. “We’ve got a contract with them. You’ve gotta understand that they own the rights to everything! That includes Coby’s image rights.”
“W-what are you saying?” Coby asks, wiping his eyes.
Darby looks over at Coby’s dejected pose and feels for the kid he’s been looking after for years. Biting at his lips, Darby can barely bring himself to answer.
“Ahhhh….kid,” Darby eventually replies, letting out a painful sigh. “It means you can’t dress like that.”
Leia slams her bottled water onto a counter. “That’s not fair!” she hisses, kicking out some of the outfits still on the floor from earlier. “Those stuffy suits don’t have any say in what my brother does or does not do!”
Darby doesn’t react. He just lowers his head and fiddles with his cell phone. He’s worked with Coby Leia and Coby for years—he knows when he needs to leave Leia to vent her frustrations.
“Coby, don’t just stand there looking sorry for yourself!” Leia commands, stomping over to him. She reaches down to his mini-skirt and lifts it. “If this is what you wanna wear and wanna be—fight for it!”
Coby can only react by taking a step back from his sister. His eyes meet her gaze only for an instant before he looks away embarrassed.
“Y-you heard Darby,” Coby squeaks nervously. “I’m not allowed”.
“No!” Leia squeals in pure desperation. Tears form behind her eyes, and she begins to sniffle. Reaching out for a brother's shoulders, Coby shrugs her off and turns his back to her.
“C-coby……?” Leia sobs.
Standing up swiftly, Darby comes over to comfort Leia. “It’s ok,” he says softly. “I think Coby understands what I’m saying”.
“No, it's not ok!!” Leia cries, pushing Darby away. “Coby was so happy on stage! I haven’t seen him smile like that since our parents died! Don’t take that away from him!”
Coby turns back to look at Leia crying her heart out. She never talks about their parents.
“Sis…,” he says through his turbulent emotions, wanting to defuse the situation before it got any worse. “I-I-It’s ok. I’m fine.”
Coby rushes over to his sister and holds her tight. Neither of them can hold back the tears as they embrace each other. Other than Darby, they are the only family each other has.
As the moments pass, Coby and Leia shed a few tears. Eventually letting each other go, Leia wipes the tears from Coby’s face and smiles.
“Look at you,” she laughs. “Your makeup is completely ruined! You’ve got mascara running down your face!”
Coby laughs and looks up at her with a smile, “So have you.”
As emotions settle and the tension clears, Leia helps Coby back into the male clothing that he was wearing before the performance. Commenting that she thinks Coby looks better with long hair, they share a moment of joy as brother and sister.
Eventually, the two are changed and ready to leave the stadium to start the long journey to their next gig. Darby, however, has more bad news he needs to share with them.
As they all enter the tour bus, he sits with them at the table. Coby and Leia sit opposite him, both tired from the evening and ready for bed. Neither of them have wanted to speak with him.
“I want to go to sleep,” Leia yawns, rubbing her eyes. “I don’t want to talk about Coby’s outfit anymore, Darby.”
“That’s not what I need to talk to you both about,” Darby replies, giving Coby a worried look.
Darby slides his iPad across the table. He shows them the article open on the screen. It’s a critical reaction to their performance.
Coby and Leia start studying the article. The headline makes Leia deeply angry to her core.
“Queer baiting!?” she shouts, pushing it away “What the hell!?”
Concerned by his sister's reaction, Coby looks over at Darby hoping for an explanation.
“It appears we might have a small PR issue,” Darby says, trying to reassure Coby. “You’re outfit choice tonight has led many to believe we’ve only done that to improve our standing with the LGBTQ community. The article goes on to say that it’s shameless and disgraceful.”
Coby begins to shake in disbelief! “But I wanted to wear that stuff,” he comments timidly.
“Can I ask a question….,” Darby replies gently, looking deep into Coby’s tearful eyes. “Are you trans?
Stunned by the question, Coby’s mouth drops, and his heat starts thudding wildly in his chest. He can’t bring himself to answer. Truthfully, he’s unsure himself. Tonight was amazing, but he’s never really been unhappy enough with his male body to even consider coming out as trans.
“Coby…,” Leia says, trying to urge her brother to speak. “Are you?”
With both Leia and Darby staring at him with expectation in their eyes, Coby begins to freak out. His body shaking and shivering, he gets to his feet and slams the table.
“I DON’T KNOW!” he shouts. “Stop pressuring me for answers! Maybe I’m just jealous of all the attention Leia gets from our fans! Did you ever think of that!”
Kicking the floor, Coby huffs as he storms off toward his bunk on the bus. Leia and Darby are left gobsmacked with their mouths wide open.
“I err…..,” Darby says to Leia, breaking the silence. “Don’t understand what just happened.”
Leia rubs her tired eyes once again. “I don’t get it either. I was certain he’d say yes.”
