Dodging and weaving between the crowd, Jacob and Sampson see their destination ahead. In the distance is the large colorful and modern Dreamscape building at the end of the block. They are both brimming with excitement as they fight the city crowd to get there.
“Yo, Jacob!” Sampson cries out, ducking and diving between people to get ahead. “Keep up!”
Not wanting to be left behind, Jacob has to work harder to keep up with his much taller friend. Being only five foot five, Jacob has to take an extra step for each one of Sampon’s long strides.
“I see it!” Jacob calls back, pointing up at the promotional Dreamscape banner hanging from the building. “Dude…wait up!”
“Hurry up, Shrimp,” Sampson teasingly shouts back, only turning briefly in the crowd to check on his friend's progress.
No way was Jacob going to let Sampson reach the building first. Jacob was just as much of a reason for them both being invited down to Dreamscape Corp for the Alpha test.
Darting between some more of the crowd, Jacob sees Sampson ahead of him. Reaching out, he can almost grab hold of the worn leather Jacket Sampson was never seen without.
“HAHA!” Sampson cheers, stepping out of the crowd and onto the large marble step of the building. “I get to choose first!”
Wheezing, Jacob struggles to push through the crowd but eventually joins Sampson on the step a little deflated.
“No…fair…,” Jacob coughs, catching his breath as he leans against his friend with one hand. “We can’t all be six foot three like you. “
Sampson chuckles, before teasingly tapping Jacob on the head. “Sucks to be you.”
“Hey…,” Jacob defensively snorts in reply. “You’re just a bean poll!”
“I told you,” Sampson replies with a mischievous grin. “If you wanna be tall like me, you can borrow my sister's heels. They would suit a girly boy like yourself!”
Having heard that recycled joke time and time again, Jacob just reacts with a simple but sour expression, before standing up straight.
“Shall…we knock?” Jacob asks, looking at the large darkened glass entrance door in front of them.
Sampson turns and shrugs. “I don’t know.”
Stepping closer to the large door, they both expect it to automatically open for them. Being the R&D building for a high-tech corp, they’d come to assume that the entire place would be high-tech.
They both stand aimlessly at the door. Nothing happens.
“Umm…,” Sampsons mumbles.
Inpatient, Jacob steps forward and presses on the large glass panel. As the door starts swinging open, Jacob turns to give Sampson a smug grin. “A normal door…?”
“After you,” Sampson says, pointing into the building. “Ladies first.”
“Fine,” Jacob scoffs, gleefully entering the lobby of the building first.
The two boys look around in awe as each step they take echo’s through the marbled tiled lobby. The lobby Is empty—not a single other soul is present After minutes of walking, they reach the small reception counter at the far side of the room.
“Hello…?” Sampson calls out, standing at the unmanned counter.
They both pull confused faces as no one appears or answers them. Jacob looks around nervously and wonders if this is even the place.
“They said come to the front desk…right?” Jacob asks, pulling out his phone to look at the time. “Is this even the right place?”
Leaning over the counter, Sampson looks behind the desk to see no one—not even a single computer or even telephone system. “Weird,” he comments, still laying on the countertop to see behind.
Just as Sampson gets up off the desk, a single loud beep echo’s around the lobby. Both Sampon and Jacob are confused as to where it even came from.
“Well hello!” a computerized voice whurs, as the sound of humming buzzes to life just behind the counter.
Almost as if it appeared from nowhere, a small square drone with twin propellers hovers in the air. Flashing with several colored lights, the drone wafts toward Sampson.
“Whoa,” Sampson says, startled by its sudden appearance and interest in him.
The drone hovers ever closer to his face. Sampson wonders if he should defend himself by batting the odd drone away from his face.
“Seem’s to like you,” Jacob chuckles, as Sampson backs away from it.
“Are you…. Sampson Fisher?” the drone squeals and squeaks.
Giving Jacob a quick but confused glance, Sampson awkwardly smiles and nods in agreement “Yeah…that’s me.”
Making rhythmic beeping noises and cheerful flashes of light, the drone Swifty switches its attention to Jacob. Rushing to hover much lower at Jacob’s eye level, the drone beeps again.
“You must be…..,” the drone’s voice pauses and makes a grinding clunk. “…Jenny Ryans?”
Instantly, Jacob gives Sampson a filthy look. Sampson can only react with a deep belly chuckle.
“No,” Jacob huffs, folding his arms. “My name is Jacob Ryans!”
Sampsons continues to bounce with laughter. “I’d forgotten I’d done that!” Sampson howls. “Yeah…this is Jenny!”
Switching its attention back to Sampson, the lights on the drone all go a deep red color—almost like it’s trying to convey dissatisfaction.
“Lucky Jenny’s physical appearance matches what’s been submitted”. The drone buzzes in disapproval. “Does the Sampson think that incorrect data like this is funny..?”
“Clearly,” Jacob sighs, replying to the drone question.
“It is funny,” Sampson sniggers, playfully pushing Jacob’s shoulder.
Whirling higher into the air, The drone’s lights all go green.
“Very well,” the drone squeaks and hums. “Applicants accepted into the Alpha phase. Please, Sampson Fisher and Jenny Ryans, follow me to the testing facility.”
As the sound of large deadlocks opening echoes through the lobby, a large slab of the wall behind the counter begins to slowly slide open. The drone flashes a beam of light on the floor. “Follow me.”
“It’s Jacob… by the way,” Jacobs angrily corrects, as all three walk around the counter and toward the new bright opening and the long corridor that’s behind.
Sampson beings to quietly giggle in reaction, knowing he’s wound Jacob up with his prank.
“Sorry…,” the drone replies, still flying forward, but spinning one hundred and eighty degrees to shine its light in Jacob's eyes. “I can't correct your profile without permission from the doctor. We will update your correct gender and name at the testing facility.
“You entered my gender as FEMALE!?” Jacob whines, pushing at Sampson as they walk, but finds himself being pushed away by Sampson's superior size.
“Don’t be such a baby,” Sampson replies with a toothy grin. “It’s just a prank bro.”
“Yeah real funny,” Jacob snidely remarks. “Just like that time you entered my name into the cheerleading tryouts and told me it was for the football team.”
The drone buzzes again in disproval, before shining its light in Sampson's face. “This one has an interesting idea of jokes.”
“Tell me about it!” Jacob answers, rubbing his arm as they all approach a single elevator at the end of the corridor. “Was so embarrassing. Of course, the cheerleading girls thought it was a riot.”
“Don’t be such a sour puss,” Sampson laughs again, patting Jacob on the head. “We all saw the pictures of you in the cheerleader's outfit and we all thought you looked cute. Not my fault you couldn’t fend those tiny girlies off.”
Jacob remembers the shame and how the school reacted. He shivers just thinking about it.
They all then stop just in front of the elevator. Sampson goes to press the call button, but the panel to the side is blank.
“Calling elevator,” the drone squeaks with a crackle and a spark.
Watching the elevator's floor display count down, Jacob doesn’t want to even acknowledge Sampson. The tension between the two friends is even enough for the Drone to notice.
“Sampson Fisher,” the drone states, hovering just above him and looking down. “During this Alpha stage, please do not enter information incorrectly as a ‘prank’. That upsets my programming. Please refer to Jenny as the correct gender and name at all times.”
“Yeah yeah,” Sampson dismissively replies. “Seem’s this robot can’t take a joke either.”
“I’m not a robot,” the drone instantly replies, its light going dark red again. “I’m an Artificial Intelligence. Please call me ARC or AI Roaminng Companion.”
Sampson turns to Jacob and gives him a sarcastic look. “Seems Arc here thinks he’s more than just a glorified robot receptionist.”
Arc’s lights flash deep red colors and it beeps. “I’m not a receptionist!” it replies with distortion. “My role is to guide Sampson Fisher and Jenny Ryans through the Alpha process and assist in the Dreamscape.”
“Stop calling me Jenny,” Jacob huffs in exasperation. “No much of an AI if you can’t even get that right!”
As Arc turns to look at Jacob, the lift pings, and the door opens. The elevator is empty.
“Sorry Jenny,” Arc replies with a beep, hovering towards and into the empty elevator, still looking at Jacob. “We will correct your profile once we get to the doctor.”
“Yeah Jenny,” Sampson teases as they both join Arc in the elevator. “Stop being such a woman about it.”
As the doors slowly close, Arc beeps and hums once more. As the elevator begins to move, Arc extends a small arm from its square body and attaches itself to a small opening in the elevator wall.
“Human friendships confuse me,” Arc remarks, whirring and buzzing with thought. “I wonder if the Sampson would be as amused if the proverbial shoes were on the other proverbial foot.”
As the lift travels, they all watch the numbers go up. Floor after floor until they reach the sixty-ninth level. As the doors slide open, Arc releases himself and floats past both the boys.
Sampson steps out straight after and looks around in awe at the large futuristic-looking room. In the center, several uplink chairs lay waiting.
“Wow,” Sampson gasps. “Look at this place. It’s like something out of a sci-fi film!”
“Yes yes,” an impatient voice replies from across the room. “Please don’t touch anything. You could damage years of my work. The Dreamscape is very delicate and all the equipment is vital.”
Not wanting to be left out, Jacob rushes forward to join Sampson, before almost stumbling as the Doctor appears in front of them.
Sampson grabs Jacob by the scruff of his neck and stops him from falling flat on his face. “No problem Doc,” Sampson confidently chuckles.
“Boy!” The Doctor screeches, frustrated by Jacob's clumsiness. “Please be careful!”
“Sorry…,” Jacob nervously answers, going bright red.
“Don’t worry Doc,” Sampson laughs, tapping Jacob on the head. “He’s just a little distracted by your little drone over there. It keeps calling him Jenny.”
The doctor looks over at Arc floating nearby with a puzzled look. “Is this correct Arc?”
Arc beeps and his lights flash red. “Yes, Doctor James. The Sampson has enacted a…practical Joke on Jenny.”
The doctor scratches his head, then turns to his to look at the console to his left. “Let's get that sorted,” he says, clicking and tapping on the keyboard.
Looking up from the console with a smile, Dr. James points at Jacob. “File updated? He asks Arc.
“Yes, Doctor,” Arc replies, Jacob and Sampson are your alpha testers.”
“Good…good,” Dr. James says, nodding. “You boys, do you know what those machines are over there on the uplink floor?”
Sampson and Jacob look over at the uplink chairs and the equipment surrounding them. “They are uplinks,” Jacob replies.
“Correct!” Dr. James says with passion, strutting over to the machines. “Do you understand what's being asked of you both?”
Following the Dr towards the machinery, Sampson reaches out to touch it. “We are Alpha testing the dreamscape today.”
“Yes,” Dr.James grins. “I assume you both know what these machines are capable of. What they will allow you to feel and experience?”
Jacob and Sampson nod in agreement. They’ve both been reading about it for weeks in preparation.
“You both understand that these machines will allow your consciousness to be transported into the dreamscape,” the Dr continues, looking extremely serious. “You both understand you will feel everything your character in the game feels. Even down to the tickle of long hair, or a gentle breeze.
“Yes,” the boys answer in unison.
The Dr grins before looking up at Arc, who’s hoovering just above them. “Do they have their champions set up and ready for testing?”
“I’ve just completed the modifications,” Arc replies with a beep. “Their champion avatars are ready for uplink.”
“Good..good,” the Dr mutters, moving to stand by another computer panel. “I’m desperate to get this Alpha going. The company is breathing down my neck to bring good results.”
As the Dr starts powering up the machines in front of them, Jacob and Sampson are left in awe. They’ve both been extremely excited about being chosen for the Alpha. Neither of them thought they’d ever be picked.
“This is fucking cool,” Sampson shouts, looking down at Jacob.
“Fuck yeah!” Jacob replies.
“Boys,” the Dr shouts over the sound of the machines powering on. “Choose a machine and remove your top layers of clothing before sitting in it.”
Scrambling to take off their shoes, shirts, and jeans, the boys both pick a chair. Like excited school children, they hop into the blue sensory goo that lines the chairs and neither of them seems bothered being in just their boxer shorts.
“The sensory padding or ‘goo’,” Dr. James explains, stepping over to Jacob’s machine. “Will help you to feel every experience your champion avatar experiences. That does mean you will feel the pleasures and the pain.”
The Dr then lifts a large panel over Jacob’s privates and locks it in place. Jacob looks down at the panel that’s directly above his manhood with a worried expression.
“Don’t look so concerned,” Dr.James chuckles. “This part allows for sexual stimulation and gender orientation within the dreamscape.”
“Sexual what now!?” Jacob squeaks. “We didn’t sign up for anything like that!”
“Stop panicking child,” Dr.James scoffs. “It’s part of the equipment that allows you to become your champion. Every single feeling and sensation your body can feel must be replicated in-game to allow your brain to project itself into the dreamscape.”
“We’re not going to….,” Jacob points down at the crotch panel. “Do sexual stuff?”
Dr.James laughs and shakes his head. “No no no. You’re not listening boy.”
Arc quickly floats over and hoovers above Jacob. “It’s part of the process for you to enter the dreamscape. Please don’t worry the Jacob. I’ve set up a simple quest for you both to complete on this occasion. Nothing too hard”
“He wouldn’t know what to do anyway!” Sampsons teasingly laughs, shouting over from his uplink chair.
Arc’s lights glow red in response.
“Lean back now please,” The Dr insists, pushing Jacob’s head down into the blue sensory goo.
As Jacob looks up at the steel rafters in the ceiling, the Dr pulls the Uplink helmet over his face. All traces of lights are cut from Jacob’s vision.
“Relax please,” the Dr comments, completing Jacob’s setup. “You'll enter the dreamscape just as soon as I’ve set up your friend.
As Jacob hears the Dr walking away, the sound of hoovering above his covered face gets louder.
“The Jacob,” Arc buzzes, his volume lower than usual.
“Yeah,” Jacob answers, muffled by the equipment covering his face.
“An option as occurred for a practical joke to be initiated on the Sampson,” Arc whurs. “Would you like to proceed?”
“Practical joke?” Jacob queries, confused at Arc's line of questioning.
Before Arc has time to answer, the Dr calls out from across the uplink floor. “Arc! We are ready to start. Please initiate sensory depreciation and we commence with uplink.”
Just like that, Jacob is left wondering.
As the sound of the room around them disappears, silence follows for both the boys. They are left in complete darkness with just their own thoughts.
Unable to move, surrounded by the sensory goo and the other uplink equipment, both the boys instantly feel like they are falling. A real sinking feeling emanates deep from within their bodies.
Like being on a rollercoaster coming down the largest drop, the two of them feel sick to their stomachs. Then, a bright flash of brilliant white light causes the falling sensation comes to a complete stop.
A single gust of a gentle breeze then wafts across the boy's faces. Warm like a summer breeze, they experience the sounds and sensations of standing in the sun-drenched meadow.
“Uplink complete,” Arc mummers, startling both the boys.
Upon opening their eyes, they see green rolling hills and blue skies. “The Dreamscape?” Jacob asks, his voice now deep and husky.
Surprised by his masculine-sounding voice, Jacob looks down. His champion avatar is muscular and athletic. He can feel his new soft golden blond locks gently wafting in the breeze.
Shocked, he pats himself down and feels every sensation. “Fucking hell,” he blurts out, impressed by how real everything feels.
“Are you happy with your champion avatar selection?” Arc beeps, hoovering in front of Jacob.
Jacob smiles, and flexes his large arm muscles, “You dam straight I am!”
Just as Jacob reaches down to equip his broadsword, he’s interrupted by an almighty high-pitched screech.
“I’M SO SHORT!” A squeaky feminine voice cries out, causing Jacob to almost fall over in surprise.
Terrified, Jacob glares at the source of the noise and is surprised to see a small blonde girl standing next to him. Her long hair, and thin gown playfully dancing in the wind.
“ARC!” the girl screeches. “What's going on!? Why am I so little and why is my voice so….high pitched!?"
Jacob narrows his eyes and stares at the young blonde girl for a moment. As Arc hovers above her, he instantly understands what's happened.
“Sampson!?” Jacob howls, pointing at his female champion avatar. “Why did you choose to be female!?”
Sampson pouts and awkwardly brushes long hair from his face. “I didn’t!”
“Look at you!” Jacob laughs, smacking his large muscular thigh. “You look so cute! Look at that little staff you’ve gone on your back and those adorable little heels.”
“ARC!” Sampson screams, looking up into the sky. “This is not my champion avatar! No way would I choose a female one! What’s going on!?”
“Incorrect,” Arc beeps, circling around Sampson's small frame. “You choose.., Lucy Lionheart, the Arc Mage.”
Sampon throws up his dainty perfectly manicured hands and tries to grab at Arc. “No, I didn’t!”
“Whoa….” Jacob laughs, using his larger body to stop Sampson from grabbing Arc. “Don’t be so rude….LUCY.”
Looking up at Jacob’s towering figure, Sampon steps back. “What the hell,” he whines. “You’re so tall!”
“Cool right?” Jacob smiles.
Sampon rapidly shakes his head and squeals. “No not cool! I don’t wanna be in a female avatar!”
Sampson throws himself to the floor in a sulk. Tears form around his eyes and both Jacob and Arc give each other a sidewards glance.
“This feels so wrong..!” Sampson whines. “I’m feeling everything about this female body. I feel the emptiness between my legs. I feel my body bouncing where it shouldn’t! Even my ass feels all puffy and big!”
“Incredible isn’t it!” Jacob booms with his powerful voice. “It’s everything I’d dreamed it would be!”
“No,” Sampon cries. “Arc, I want to change champion. I really didn’t choose to be female.”
Arc beeps and his lights flash. Hovering to be near Jacob for protection, Arc buzzes.
“Option unavailable in Aphla,” Arc explains.
“WHAT!?” Sampon growls, getting to his feet and awkwardly stomping towards Jacob in his heels.
“It’s an Alpha test Sampon,” Jacob replies, trying to defuse the tension. “I guess you’re stuck that way until we complete the test.”
“No fucking way I am!” Sampon screams. “I don’t even know this champion's moves or skills. I don’t even know how to walk in heels! How am I supposed to fight?”
“Learn her move set then dude…,” Jacob confidently replies, running his fingers through his golden locks. “….Get good.”
“Shut up Jacob,” Sampson hisses, folding his arms tight.
Arc then hovers directly in front of them both. “The town of Frent is just ahead,” Arc explains, turning to face the horizon. “Our quest starts in one of the taverns in the town.”
“No,” Sampson says disrespectfully. “I’m not walking in these heels and neither am I being seen or treated like a girl. I’m going to stay right here.”
Reaching across to Sampon, Jacob grabs the back of Sampson's dress and hurls him up into his board shoulders.
“DUDE!” Sampson screams, kicking and fussing as Jacob holds him tight. “You’re so dead if you do this!”
“Lighten up,” Jacob laughs, “It’s just a practical joke!”
Arc beeps. “Ah, very true!. I think I will get this humor thing….don’t you think Jacob?”
Sampson continues kicking as Jacob holds him tight. “Not funny,” he cries. “I’m going to kick you both so hard in the shins!”
“Lucy’s a real firecracker,” Jacob comments, taking a single step and breaking into a march toward the town. “Not sure what your skills are, but I’m looking forward to finding out!”
