The crack of fire rages overhead, slamming into the wall behind and turning it to rubble. Shantu clings to the small cover he’s found as he slowly reloads his hand cannon. Cocking the weapon, he peeks over the wall and spies out his target. A Vex Hydra, The Transformative Mind. It is surrounded by other Vex units, as it hovers behind a tower of Vex architecture at the end of the artificial Venus gorge. Seeming a simple task at first, it got progressively harder as the hidden sniper Hobgoblins started firing from up high. Shantu recoils back into cover with a rapid snap, as the flash of a Hobgoblins Line rifle cracks just inches from his head.
“Shit, that was close!” He says breathing a sigh of relief.
“Guardian, be more careful!” His ghost chatters with concern, still hidden from view. “This area is swamped in Darkness! I can’t revive you here.”
“I know, I know,” Shantu replies as he readies his sniper rifle. Removing the magazine, he reloads the oversized weapon awkwardly while crouching behind cover. “Ghost, what are their positions?” He asks.
“There are many Vex located in a northernly position from us,” His Ghost unhelpfully replies.
Cocking his sniper so that It’s ready for fire, he lets out another, more frustrated sigh. “Ghost!” He says loudly. “We worked on this! Give me the position in times on a clock. Also, I only want to know the of the units firing at us!”
“Right,” The Ghost answer as it materializes three meters above his head.
For a moment, no gunfire is heard. Shantu looks up expectantly at his Ghost. “Well?” He demands as he readies himself for action.
Two flashes of bright crimson fire zip across his Ghost’s side. The fire only missing destroying it by a tiny fraction. The Vex had turned one hundred percent of their attention at his Ghost! Jumping up from the cover with lightning speed, Shantu eyes both the Hobgoblins targeting his Ghost. Neither had seen him aiming, as they powered up another shot toward his Ghost.
Crack! Crack!
Two massive booms as Shantu fires off two cartridges from his Sniper, with arrow-like precision. Both Vex units explode into clouds of metallic parts and Vex milk as the sound of his gunshots resonates through the gorge.
“Ghost!” Shantu cries as he quickly scales over his cover and bolts further into the gorge. Running at speed, the ground thudding with every step beneath the Titan’s heavyset body and armor, he slides behind the next viable cover location. Pinning himself as close to the small wall as possible.
“Well, that went well,” His ghost chirps as it glides carelessly towards him on the floor.
Shantu grumbles and his moans of displeasure are only made louder as it echoes in his helmet. “What were you thinking?” He questions, tapping the side of his helmet in an insulting fashion, trying to signal to his Ghost how foolish that was.
“What do you mean?” His Ghost asks, fixing his single, dim blue lens, directly at the crouching Titan.
“You almost got hit!” Shantu cries out.
His Ghost doesn't reply, it just floats silent nearby. Its gaze was still fixed on him.
Shaking his head, he tries his best to focus on the job at hand. “How far are we from the target Hydra?”
“One hundred meters,”
The Titan re-equips his hand cannon and takes a peek out of cover. The Vex units, at the end of the gorge, are actively looking for his location. Only three Goblins surround the target Hydra. He knows this should be a simple task from here on. If all else fails, his Sunbraker Super was almost ready.
In one swift movement, the large figure of a Titan leaps from cover. His weight crushing the dirt below. The sound of cracking rocks and metal beneath his feet rings out, as he runs with speed towards the Target. His stealth was blown as the Vex units start firing wildly in his direction. The Crimson shots flashing past him as he ducks and weaves to avoid them.
Without hesitation, he fires one round, then another, towards the closest Vex unit. His shots hit as the Goblin falls to the fall in a heap. Before he can even turn, fire from a Slap rifle hits him directly from behind. His shield takes the brunt of the damage as he swings his aiming arm in that direction. A great whoosh of air could be heard as he swings his aim towards the next two Goblins.
Crack, Crack, Crack. He fires three separate shots in their direction.
The sound of broken metal and spilling fluid fills the gorge as the two remaining units fall to the floor. Without stopping, Shantu races for cover, as the Hydra takes notice and starts sending a volley of Aeon Mule fire. He hits the deck, with a thump, as he slides into cover. The purple splash of fire, lights up the shadowed area, as the Hryda’s fire misses its target.
Again, pinning himself as close to the cover as possible, he takes a long deep breath in. The Hydra units continue pummelling his location. Thankfully for the Titan, the cover holds back the onslaught.
“Shantu,” His Ghost calls out. “The Transformative Mind is right on top of us! What's your plan!?”
Unbeknown to the Ghost, a smirk was appearing across the Titan's helmet-covered face. As he starts Pulling out his old trusty rocket launcher, he lets out a menacing laugh.
“This is the plan,” He laughs as he lifts the enormous launcher onto his shoulder.
Standing up with confidence, to fire his rocket, he finds himself stunned. Hesitation takes over as the Hydra’s towering presence looms over him. The hovering Vex units hums and buzzes with bristling blue energy, as it prepares an area of effect Shock wave attack, which will surely kill him.
Instinct takes over as he pulls the heavy, worn trigger of his launcher. The recoil pushes his shoulder backward with tremendous force, as the missile blazes out the business end. Within seconds, an almightly blaze of fire and electric blue arc energy frenzies in a huge cloud of destruction. Shantu’s body is obliterated as the Hydra’s main shell crashes to the floor and starts glowing a brilliant white. A high-pitched noise screeches from the machine, as the white glow gets brighter and brighter.
A second loud explosion fills the gorge, echoing from wall to wall. The Hydra’s self-detonation creates a perfectly round crater within the Vex infected ground. His Ghost knew that even if he did service the first explosion, he wouldn’t have survived the second.
“I’ve got you,” The Ghost calls out as it splits apart, forming its light-giving resurrection sphere over a small part of Shantu’s remains.
His body starts reforming from the marvelous bright light as nothing had happened at all. The Ghost, reviving his dead guardian for what was well over the thousandth time, almost seemed distracted. Its focus remained solely on the shattered shell remains of the fallen Vex Hydra.
“There you go,” His Ghost mutters. Distracted, as it flies off to scan the remains.
Shantu breathes his first new breath after his resurrection. No matter how many times he’s regenerated, the first breath is always the hardest. Like being born again, over and over again. However, this time it seemed even more difficult to take his first breath. It was like something he’d never experience before. Exasperated, Shantu sits on the lip of the explosion crater as the Ghost continues scanning.
Struggling to breathe normally, Shantu knew something with the respawn had gone wrong! He just couldn’t put his finger on it!
“Hmmm,” chirps his Ghost, still scanning the wreckage. “I can’t find the access code we’ve been tasked with acquiring. All I can find are references to a Guardian Simulation experiment,” It adds.
A silence fills the air as Shantu doesn’t reply. He is more focused on what's going on with himself. Holding out his arms in front of him, he quickly realizes he is no longer wearing the armor he’d worked so hard to ascertain. Gone were the large shoulder guards and armor-plated arm shielding. Replaced by tight-fitting metallic mesh.
“Shantu?” His Ghost questions. “Are you listening?” It adds as it looks in its guardian's direction.
What the Ghost see’s, he barely understands. Flying in close, he baths Shantu in light, as it performs a scan of the confused Guardian. Shantu, not noticing his Ghost, was gazing perplexed at his legs. He was at a loss as to why his waist seems so skinny, yet his hips seem so large.
“I did everything, like normal,” The Ghost belligerently mutters to itself. “No, no. This doesn’t make any sense at all!”
“Am I wearing Hunter armor? Why am I wearing Hunter armor Ghost?” Shantu asks with an uncharacteristically high-pitched voice.
Shantu grabs at his throat as he is bewildered by the sound of his voice. He starts coughing and gagging to try clearing it.
“What going on?” He asks, still with the odd high-pitched voice. His throat clears did nothing to help.
“Guardian,” His Ghost says with concern. “It appears you’ve been hit by a Vex simulation program,”
“Meaning?” He replies in whiny high-pitched frustration. “Ghost, is there something wrong with my voice modulator?” He adds.
“No, that’s not it.” His Ghost worries as he performs another scan of the panicked Guardian.
“It's my voice modulator, isn’t it?” Shantu asks with slight annoyance. “That’s why I’m sounding so feminine, right?”
“Guardian,” The Ghost answers softly as it finishes its second scan. “You don’t have a modulator anymore,”
Shantu scoffs at his Ghost absurd comment. That just was nonsense. He had a modulator! All exo’s needed one to project their simulated vocal artificial vocal cords.
“No, really,” His Ghost pleads for him to understand. “You don’t have any of your Exo parts,” His Ghost continues.
Shantu looks up at his Ghost. If he didn’t have his helmet on, his Ghost would have seen his irritated and incensed expression.
“What are you talking about!” Shantu cries out.
“Guardian, I don’t know how to tell you this,” His Ghost says slowly and delicately. “Your human again.”
“What! Impossible!” Shantu yells as he stands to his feet in shock. He wobbles, as he stands, before steadying himself upright. With no further hesitation, he grabs his left gauntlet with his right hand and pulls at the armor. After much force, the gauntlet slips free, exposing his soft, hairless skin beneath.
“Holy travelers light!” He exclaims with an almost cat-like screech “What's happened to me?” He screams as he looks upon his small dainty human hand. I
“Errr,” His Ghost replies with apprehension. “That’s not the only thing that’s changed,” It continues as Shantu’s gaze meets his single lense.
“Ghost, tell me!” Shantu demands as he fights the urge to pluck it from the air.
“Not only are you now human,” His Ghost says as it hovers further away from Shantu’s reach. “It appears you are now a female human.”
“What!” Shantu cries as he swings his arms trying to grab the just-out-of-reach Ghost.
“Don’t get mad,” His Ghost continues. “It appears you are now also a Hunter!”
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me!” Shantu explodes with rage. “A Hunter!?”
His Ghost makes a few gear turning noises, as it looks at its guardian perplexed. “Are you more annoyed at becoming a Hunter than a human female?” The Ghost asks in confusion.
“Ghost,” Shantu responds with a wag of a finger in its direction. “Being an Exo, I haven’t had working male parts for years. Becoming a female makes next to no difference to me.”
“But your so slender looking?” The Ghost replies.
“Yeah?” Shantu replies optimistically as he bends and turns to check his new figure. “I see what you mean,” He laughs
A silence washes over the conversation as Shantu continues checking out his new slender feminine figure. He pulls at the tight fitting mesh and leather hunter armor he is now wearing. His takes special interest in the breast plate of his new chest armor.
“A hunter though,” Shantu sighs. “I’m crap with knifes!”
