The American Revolution was before the French Revolution. Thomas Jefferson who wrote the American Decloration of Independence, advised France with theirs, but he didn't like how violent and radical the French were becoming.

By reputation, at least, Banastre Tarleton was the most notorious officer in the British Army. He had lost a couple of fingers from one hand at some point. It doesn’t seem he was well-regarded by the other British officers; he comes across as a useful thug. The most famous American turncoat was Benedict Arnold and, even if you betraying your country helps our cause, you’re still someone who will never be truly trusted. He spends some time with Tarleton and there are stories of Tarleton’s Legion leaving a wake of destruction. We don’t have very good British sources, so an anti-British bias isn’t surprising. The Historian H.W. Brand’s ’First Civil War’ tells the story of the colonies during the Revolution. In a really large number of the colonies it’d be difficult to tell a war was on at all. The numbers varied WILDLY by area, by village, by towns, it just depended but the basic breakdown was about 1/3 of people favored independence, 1/3 wanted to stay part of England and 1/3 couldn’t care less either way. The British tried to recruit colonists but tended to treat them so badly, look down on them so much that not many came and most slipped off in the night.

The tactic of bunching all of the soldiers together in a formation and firing as a group was done because the muskets of that time were horribly inaccurate. It was done to give the best odds of hitting their targets.

Biss this was not the civil war of 1861 - 1865 in which American soldiers fought and died to free the slaves. This was the war of independence from the British which took place in 1775 - 1783.
