2024-07-04 04:50:13 +0000 UTCYou gave it a 4.75 because it was missing that “heartbreak” element. But to me that emotional heartbreak is the fact that she knows her daughter will die and still decides to have her anyway knowing the pain she will feel. The part that always gets me is when she says “I embrace it”.

2024-05-29 03:19:32 +0000 UTCYour comment about the 12 ships being like the 12 apostles is insightful and got me thinking. The movie is a retelling of the Christ story but from a science fiction perspective. 12 strangers from an alien land traveling to the corners of the world offering salvation to the human race through the Logos(ancient Greek term that has several meanings including language). However, in the movie the savior is technology not a God and it is Louise who knows the future not Jesus Christ. There are other parallels like the sacrificing of the daughter but I'll let you find them on a second viewing.

2024-01-21 04:42:53 +0000 UTCDenis Villeneuve is an incredibly talented director. All of his stuff is very good, he also made Sicario that I think I remember you liking. With your reaction to this, I think you’d really enjoy his more recent movies Blade Runner 2049 and Dune. Both visually stunning, with great scores that have some in common with the Arrival score, and also have a lot of story depth.

2023-05-23 22:06:59 +0000 UTCIt’s ended up my personal favorite movie… but really only after seeing it a couple times. It’s absolutely worth seeing again some time, it has a very different feeling that still works when you know where the movie is going and can see it unfold with that context. I like to think of her memories like ripples on a pond that go in all directions, starting from where she really learned the language enough and started to lose her anchor on a particular point in time. At the start of the film the “ripples” are far from the center and weak so she doesn’t understand why she’s so depressed, then she slowly has more coherent formed “memories” that haven’t happened yet because the effects of time no longer holding you the same way echo backward. Such an incredible movie.

2023-05-13 22:23:38 +0000 UTCThis movie has a special place in my heart so thank you for reacting to it. I think it does such a good job of establishing in the viewer feelings of mystery, foreboding, excitement, uncertainty, and slight fear when faced with the alien visitors. Everything about the aliens is portrayed with such a sense of ambiguity. Overall, it feels like a very realistic perspective of how our world might react to this kind of situation. The script is very smart and unique (even amongst sci-fi films). I also love the sound design and cinematography of the movie; there are a lot of scenes in the movie when these audio and visual elements are interwoven beautifully. I like that you talk during these movies because it helps me understand your view and gauge your reaction, which is kind of the point of reaction videos. Also, you'll sometimes notice certain details in a movie that I missed watching on my own, which is helpful. Just remember to stay humble though when predicting plot points lol.

2023-05-13 18:14:30 +0000 UTCUnfortunately the death of the daughter was a necessary catalyst to save mankind. Without it there would of been no connection between alien and human. Without the death of the daughter the memories and symbols would of been potentially lost without the significant event that made those memories so very special.

2023-05-13 08:57:51 +0000 UTCI'm gunna answer all Biss questions. So the movie was filmed in Montreal. That was Jeremy Renner (hawkeye) playing Ian Donnelly. The caged bird, don't know what type of bird, was there as like a early warning system for any kind of environmental hazards within the ship .The sounds the hepatapod make is a combination of camels, pigs, birds and Maori Flutes. Abbott and Costello were an American comedy duo team in the 1940's. I think that was all Biss questions.

2023-05-13 04:39:41 +0000 UTCHaving never seen this movie before, enjoyed it very much. Judging from your very enthusiastic reaction I would have guessed you giving it a 6.5 out of 5 stars! I thought the movie was very academic and yet still "artistic". This isn't a movie I would normally watch, as I thought it was a little slow paced. But I do think both Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner are great actors. Plus Renner is now a real life bad ass, what with surviving be run over by a snow plow! I'm giving the movie a 4 out of 5 just because I had so much fun watching you and your excitement over it. Also I would absolutely watch your version of the movie!
