Both seem to have a very similar relationship dynamic to Beatrice - I saw alot of Subaru mannerisms in Roswaal's interactions with her. No wonder Beatrice developed a kind of soft spot for him so quickly. Both Subaru and Roswaal were saved by a beautiful white/silver haired woman and fell deeply in love with them devoting themselves to helping them as a way of repaying the favor. Sounds familiar to Subaru in S1 right? The only difference is Subaru was given Return by Death so he was still able to save Emilia. Roswaal has been living with the loss of Echidna and his regret of not being strong enough to protect her for 400 years. Yeea its not surprising he has developed this unhealthy toxic way of viewing the world and relationships as a coping mechanism for that trauma. Roswaal taking on behavior tics and dressing from Hector, Warlock of Melancholy, I think is a way to never forget that failure. That confrontation against Hector was his greatest display of weakness.. and he hated it. Subaru having Return by Death is the only use he has to Roswaal. But since Subaru has thrown that away for this bet, Roswaal is convinced Subaru will fail. At this point I think Roswaal is just coping. He cannot comprehend an ordinary person having the power to save everyone, when he couldn't even save Echidna. I think that was the biggest reason for Roswaal getting triggered at Subaru at the end there. That's what he meant by "I still have the advantage." 'Because you made this bet to not use your greatest weapon, you have no possibility to succeed. So I believe I will win no matter what you do.' He essentially wants Subaru to rely on Return by Death as his one go-to power and sacrifice everything and everyone for Emilia, the same way Roswaal clings to his Tome of Wisdom book as his guide for life. Now that Subaru has forsaken Return by Death and still claims to want to win everything, Roswaal is insulted by it.
