I would describe Marty Mauser as a "sociopathic narcissist" was too unlikable to root for as you guys said (Greg & Andrew). He keeps manipulating everyone around him to achieve his goal. This movie is a cinematic stress test, particularly its relentless energy and Timothée Chalamet's performance. The film is a "big-budget arthouse roller coaster ride" that balances Safdie’s signature chaotic intensity with a sprawling, 1950s period-piece ambition. Widely considered a career-best, Chalamet’s portrayal of Marty Mauser is described as a "trial of cinematic bravura." His transformation into a "stick-thin, beady-eyed" striver. Something like a 1970s-era Al Pacino. Josh Safdie’s solo debut is noted for its "breakneck storytelling" and "surgical precision." While it maintains the "anxiety-inducing" DNA of Uncut Gems. Darius Khondji's 35mm cinematography and Daniel Lopatin's '80s-inspired synth score have been singled out as highlights that create a "fever dream" atmosphere. I don't know!!! One Battle After Another is also cinematically incredible starring Leonardo DiCaprio (also Oscar contender).

I mean… he is an objectively bad person. He’s an interesting character to watch played brilliantly by Timothee, but this does not negate the fact that Marty is a hustler who takes advantage of those around him for his own personal gain!

Calling Marty Mauser an "awful person" has to be the most ragebait fake virtue signaling thing I've ever seen. I feel like people who say that have either never had an actual pursuit for something in their lives or are propping up themselves in an imaginary moral high horse with holier-than-thou sanctimonious performative activism.
Andrew in particular just keeps calling Marty a bad person for EVERYTHING he did (or didn't do).
Marty - "mom can you please don't leave dirty glasses in my room it attracts bugs"
Andrew - "OMG WHAT AN AWFUL PERSON"
*Marty catches his mom lying to him (as usual) trying to make her son quit his game*
Andrew - "OMG THIS GUY IS AWFUL"
*marty escapes from a controlling uncle who pays cops to arrest him*
Andrew - "THIS GUY IS AWFUL"
*every second of this film showing the audience how much ping pong means to marty mauser*
Andrew - "THIS GUY DOESNT EVEN CARE ABOUT PING PONG"
*marty Mauser continually being sabatoged by his foster mom from participating in a game that he loves*
Andrew - "I DONT KNOW BUT THIS GUYS SUCKS"
*marty mauser isn't jesus christ*
Andrew - "HOW HORRIBLE IS THIS GUY"

Not based on a true story but loosely inspired by Marty Reisman (a ping pong player). And fun fact: Rockwell really was a vampire in an alternate ending so you can take his sentence as a true statement even if we never got to see that ending! The alternate was gonna have Rockwell appear behind Marty whilst he was old and with his granddaughter at a concert and then he bites him. It would’ve cut to black. All the prosthetics for old Marty were even made but never used.
