I'm also queer and have the exact opposite opinion. I prefer the honest and sometimes imperfectly phrased reaction of allies over performative allyship any day.
I enjoy their reactions to queer content a lot. So thanks guys, very entertaining, hope to see more!

Thank you for the reaction guys! As someone who's been down the rabbit hole of HR since the first episode aired, it's nice to see fresh reactions to the show. It gets me out of the echo chamber. Also as a book reader, I feel like we can get nit picky on what reactors miss but I think you'll reactions have been real and it's great that the show stands on its own. As a Canadian, it makes me even prouder that this little show is having such a big cultural impact 🇨🇦

I get so frustrated when people compare Scott coming out with Ilya and Shane. Not that these reactors did so, but so many do. There is absolutely NO comparison. Scott coming out was about his personal life, but Shane and Ilya coming out as a couple challenges the 'integrity' of the sport. Because they are direct rivals, every win, loss, or penalty between them would be scrutinized as potentially 'fixed' or influenced by their relationship. That is a professional burden Scott and Kip never had to carry. Also, how can people compare a North American player retiring to a Russian superstar who was the captain of the Olympic team? For Ilya, being outed isn't just a PR scandal; it’s a total loss of his home country and a genuine safety risk if his contracts are terminated. Scott had a soft landing; Ilya faces an abyss. Scott came out as he was stepping away, which allowed him to control the narrative without it affecting his play on the ice. Shane and Ilya are the faces of the league. They have to face teammates, coaches, and opposing fans every single night. The loss of trust from their locker rooms is a much higher price to pay while still active. The issue isn't just being gay; it’s the relationship. In the book, Shane is aware that he could likely survive coming out as a single gay man. But coming out as Ilya Rozanov’s partner would make every game they play against each other a spectacle that undermines their teammates' hard work.

I hate critiquing reactors/reaction content, because it always veers into "you're not reacting right!!11!!" territory which is very dumb as there's no "right" way to react for an audience, but... as a queer man, I don't think Aaron is the best RR host for this kind of content in the future. 😬 He often finds himself in offensive territory (as the YouTube comments tore into him for in previous episodes, like calling Shane the "feminine one" in the relationship), and while it's obviously not out of any kind of malice or bigotry, it is from a place of ignorance/being very uninformed on queer culture, and that can still be offensive and hurtful for queer people to hear/watch. As he said at the end of the first reaction, this was his first time watching a show "like this" with "non-hetero characters" in it. He can obviously grow and learn in his own time, but this was a really hard watch at times.
And the other thing is... I don't think he's genuinely invested or interested in this genre/content, and the sort of fake jokey enthusiasm/endearment he tries to put on every single time Gay Stuff happens feels like very transparent pandering and intentionally disingenuous (which I personally find more uncomfortable/offensive), and then he looks miserable/checked out the rest of the time. I don't mean to make him feel bad (in fact I hope he doesn't see this), I'm just looking out for queer people who go into this looking for joy or a little healing, and find themselves offended/hurt instead. Please take this as genuine heartfelt input and feedback, and not an attack on anyone. <3
