Fun fact! Julie Benz didn’t know Rita was going to be killed off until three days before the scene. Michael c Hall was told of her death 3-4 weeks in advance. When the scene was filmed, only Michael c Hall was there. So the bulk of the cast had no idea, a few people were just given pages. The writers wanted to “maximize the shock”. Julie was devastated, and actually went to therapy after this. Her husband (then boyfriend) had a “funeral” for her in her trailer, and she was doing tequila shots since she was just gonna be laying in the tub. Julie has said she wished she knew where things were heading, she felt she let Rita down by not stepping up in the writers room more, wanting to have fought for Rita to be treated as a dimensional character and not a “plot device”.
