Jason wasn’t controlling his tether. If you recall in the scene in the closet they were mirroring each other (I assume for fun or as a game). It was quick thinking by Jason to employ this again and have his tether walk into the fire.

There's the story of how we were once whole beings with two faces, four arms and four legs but we were split into two halves by Zeus due to our arrogance.... That feels correct when I think of that story and compare it to this movie.... Our halves that made us once whole want their chance in the sun i.e the doppelgangers they are the half of us cut away that once made us whole.... hence the scissors to represent that separation and also being used to symbolically separate themselves again (untethering)... Just a thought and more likely than not a shot in the dark and completely wrong it wouldn't be the first time and certainly won't be the last! lol 😅🤣❤️❤️
