MARS ATTACKS! (1996) - Movie WATCH ALONG!!

Tim Burton takes a delightfully zany detour into science fiction!! What's another trading card series that should be made into a major motion picture, hmmmm???

MARS ATTACKS! (1996) - Movie WATCH ALONG!!

Comments

Ghostwatch , what can i say. it was recommended to me, i watched and was surprisingly impressed. BBC like actual BBC UK anchors and after-school program hosts were used for a ghost movie and what was supposed to be a harmless prank on the public turned.... The lore surrounding the movie makes it even more intense. BBC ran it once and never again, but everyone over there knows about it so if looking for an international boost in numbers maybe this is the ticket and it is getting close to Halloween.

"Charming" that's the word I would use for the purposeful bad CGI lol It added greatly to the fun and while stop motion would have been EPIC! The CGI still got the unrealistic FX across and made a fun splash ♥️♥️

Okay so.. because Coy asked how the special effects fared at the time.... Burton SPECIFICALLY "wanted to make [the special effects] look cheap and purposely fake-looking as possible." Originally Burton wanted this to be stop motion., and approached Henry Selick, who worked on The Nightmare Before Christmas, but he was busy with James and the Giant Peach. Through a complicated series of changes regarding the special effects crews, eventually they recruited Industrial Light and Magic, who had worked on Jumanji. Burton was persuaded to change from stop motion to CGI, yet still, the point was to make the special effects look as unrealistic as possible. Now... was it "bad" per se? I mean, kinda?? Especially when Jurassic Park came out 3 years prior. But I think it's more of the style and general feel of the CGI that was purposely made to look fake and ridiculous, which lends itself to being "bad" in this case.

Such a wicked classic! Top 10 Tim Burton film. Easy. One of Danny Elfman's best title themes as well.
