I don't think Nick killed his family. My guess - when initially watching - was that Arty killed them. That's why Nick used the hammer on him. Maybe they eventually disclose who actually killed Nick's family, or maybe the whole idea is the character development of Nick this season, and their murders aren't important. BTW most fans HATE the Nick storyline. It's considered a massive waste of space, but it does have its purpose. For me, I got so sick of Pellegrino, and I hate that because he's a good actor. But the writers had a hard on for him.
