Chapter 9 of Broken Dreams: Like Tears in the Rain is out for Squires.

I believe apologies are moot at this point. For various irl reasons, I have slipped, and need to do something to regain my previous punctuality.

Anyway, enjoy the chapter. It's probably one of my greatest to date. Just writing it made me feel better.

I think Jon's parentage will be the hook that actually connects both plot lines. Jon is still drifting and has no reason to involve himself with the royals. Maybe I missed something but why is Melisandre even here? Does she not sense that the threat of Others is gone? What is her game?

Honestly, if a skinchanger can master just brushing across the thoughts and perceptions of living things around them, then he could do a passable imitation of Jedi-style combat precognition. Theoretically, he should be able to sense the immediate intentions, and with practice even see through the eyes of every foe that comes at him and ever animal with a view of the fight. And that doesn't even touch on the more obscure uses for animals. A sufficiently strong and focused skinchanger might even be able to imitate some of Skitter's tricks from Worm, like warging a bunch of insects and landing them on critical parts of an enemy's body to get a full 3d mental map of exactly where and how the enemy's body is positioned, and how they are moving, even in total darkness.

I loved the new chapter. The glimpse into Aegon’s head was excellent. No Mel romance is a bit of a relief, though his ‘plan’ to use her to hatch eggs is nuts. If R’hllor could hatch dragon eggs, the cult would have a dozen dragons by now. And with friends like R’hllor, does humanity really need enemies? The Jon and Bloodraven interactions are gold. Bloodraven is giving Jon some excellent life advice, not to mention some extremely valuable skills. I hope that Bloodraven is smart enough to lie to Jon about his parentage. Jon doesn’t need even more grief.

I've always wanted to see a fic actually use skinchanging strategically in battle. In canon, Arya uses the cats eyes to see when she's blind, and I've always thought it was such a missed opportunity in fics (surprisingly so in most stark-wanks) that they never use the ability to cover their blind-spots mid battle. I've had the idea of Jon using Mormonts raven to survey his surroundings in battle to guard his back in my own fic, but it will be quite a long time before the plot gets to that point unfortunately.

The new setup is different and annoying to read.., just saying
