2025-02-22 01:25:17 +0000 UTCReading this update reminded me of in college I took a class on WWII and one of the readings talked about how the bond between soldiers was pretty tenuous. When the war was over, a lot of soldiers found they didn't really like some of their squadmates. Behaviors that you shrugged off before became more annoying, some guy's shitty opinions you can no longer tolerate, or you just plain didn't have anything in common. Once you're no longer depending on each other for survival that illusion of friendship starts to break down. Seems like that's partly what Petrova is going through. I mean, technically they're still in a war, but I can see it being different enough to cause this type of problem.

Both view their race as superior, both motivate their followers by promising a future where they’re on top, and both are clinging so desperately to their ideology that they would rather burn everything to the ground than acknowledge the changing reality around them. Honestly, now that I’m thinking about it, that’s kind of a theme throughout the Pinwheel series: that people need to adapt and be open to change, or they will ultimately fail. Also that aliens are hot.

I do however have plenty of stories planned for Jarilo that I hope to get to in time. One of them was part of the last poll, which features a Jarilan Replete leaving the hive to become a chef so she can feed other species the way she feeds her colony. Another features a person who is very down on his luck moving to Jarilo to start a new life and falling in love with a Jarilan there. We also have the recent story Rule of Three which prominently features a Jarilan Worker.

If its interest, you could do another story on Jarilo. Fully exploring how a human-insecto society would actually function- including how its a mostly female/ very horny population. Maybe even do another competition short story between a polar and a 'mating' cast of Jalirians. A special cast specifically designed to 'gather' DNA of other species and introduce it to the hive. I guarantee you, people would crave that.
