Glad to hear you've been enjoying it, man. Thanks for reading! There's loads more Pinwheel in the pipeline, I've got a lot of plans for the setting.

I have to say, this is some damn good sci-fi. No dumb underdog cliches, no "one man armies", just some good old fashioned humans kicking some alien asses. Honestly I found myself skimming through most of the porn for the politics, which I enjoyed throughly. I loved the characters, I loved the premise, and most of all I loved the tank combat, which I think you did a very admirable job of handling, I'd love to see more of that, and I hope more of your stories in the future are like this.

Hydrogen fuel is actually central to a lot of the design principles of the Coalition ships and vehicles. It creates a kind of recyclable ecosystem within a fleet that allows all of its components to stay fueled. It all starts with the Jump Carrier. UNN ships use fission reactors to generate power, despite having access to fusion plants, because the cooling system has so many other uses. The reactors are cooled by water, simple H20. When the water is heated to a certain temperature by waste heat, it undergoes a process known as thermo-chemical cracking, which separates the hydrogen and oxygen molecules. The resulting oxygen is used for life support, and the hydrogen is siphoned off as fuel. This process can be repeated essentially forever as long as the carrier group has access to water ice, and until the nuclear rods have to be replaced. The ground vehicles in the setting use hydrogen fuel cells that require hydrogen and oxygen to function. These cells work by passing hydrogen through an anode and oxygen through a cathode. At the anode, the hydrogen molecules are split into electrons and protons. The protons pass through an electrolyte membrane, while the electrons pass through a circuit to generate electricity. At the cathode, the protons, electrons, and oxygen combine to exhaust pure H20. This H20 can then be used for life support, or it can be returned to the carrier and used to cool its fission reactors, starting the whole process over. As for what state the hydrogen and oxygen are stored in, as long as the aforementioned processes aren't interrupted, and the technology is available, they could be converted into any state required. Missiles will likely use solid fuel, yes, as they aren't manufactured aboard the ships.

Question, reading this for the first time and I couldn't help notice that hydrogen fuels pretty much all the Coalitions toys it seems. Is this the normal liquid hydrogen or the more experimental metallic hydrogen? Just asking because having point defense missiles fueled with any liquid fuel, espically one that loves to boil off at the drop of a hat seems like a bad idea. Current generation missiles and ICBMs are all solid fuels that are always ready, plus they can be smaller since solid fuels are denser so they can carry more missiles in the in the same volume of space. And they don't need to constantly be topped up as boil off occuers so there is less maintenance that needs to be done for the ships crew on that additional hardware. Also taking into consideration hydrogen in its liquid and gaseous states takes up a lot of space the Yagda would be mostly a hydrogen fuel tanks plus the hardware needed to keep it from going through a phase change you don't want and that seems really inefficient for a state of the art super MBT I'm not as familiar with hydrogens metallic state beyond that it burns so hot that using in atmospheres and close to the ground with friendlies walking within meters of the flames would be a spectacularly bad idea

Interesting ideas. An alternate universe where Borealis conquered Earth is one that gets requested a lot too.

Snekguy

A couple of ideas I'd like to see in future stories or alternate universes: 1. Borealans/Rask call those of their own kind whom they perceive as weak 'clawless'? Consider a Borealan who suffered some sort of incident with her own people when she was very young; as a result she immerses herself in all things human, to the point where she deliberately blunts/dulls her claws -- because she no longer needs or wants them! 2. A dark alternate universe where humans 'domesticated' the Borealans to the point where they're our pets...

Really, really enjoyed it! One observation - the font changes at the start of Chapter 21 on the ePub version.

What a great book! An entirely different perspective than each of the other 'Pinwheel' stories. I frequently return to them. Thanks for posting it and making it available to your fans. I also eagerly await each installment of Tabitha's adventure. Don't stop the work that you do!

Hey Edinku, welcome. Glad to hear you enjoyed the story. I've actually done five XCOM stories, which you can find in the master list here: https://pastebin.com/dHd9iFCN Keep in mind that they're some of the first things that I wrote, so they're less polished than my more recent stuff.

Snekguy

Hey first time reader here and I was hook with your story and universe! Will definitely check your other stories. Looking foward for more, any thoughts on doing a XCOM story, with the new game releasing?

Edinku

Okay, everything is queued for upload everywhere, and it's all wrapped up. I'm gonna take a day or two off to recoup, and then I'll start the next story.

Snekguy

Excellent, looking forward to reading this!

Perfect our governor just extended our stay at home order in my state although I'm an essential employee I have something to do on my off time other than video games!

Giggles fun time

Excellent! That’s tomorrow’s Lockdown entertainment sorted!
