General

Harlowe is a barista and waiter at a breakfast & lunch spot a few blocks from where Ratticus does his appointments with Dr. Zo. They're also one of a few different managers there, but keep mellow about it. They get their dumbo ears from their mother, and their sibling has fancy ears like their father.

Harlowe enjoys music, alone time, tea, and going to art museums. They also love going to see rock shows and going to the movie theatre, as long as they have noise cancelling headphones. They don't particularly enjoy libraries, nor do they enjoy shopping for clothes unless it's for someone else. One of their all-time favorite activities to do, even in passing, is sharing music with others.

Work

Harlowe babysat for a while until they were old enough to get a job legally. They don't mind children, and this helped their younger sibling have friends to play with after school. Since then, they bounced around a few jobs until settling at this breakfast & lunch spot! They work front of house and deal with a lot of customers and servicing.

Harlowe likes to come off more innocent or clueless than they actually are, especially around customers or new people. This helps them to deal with rude customers, and sometimes get out of otherwise unpleasant or unwanted situations. Harlowe has a strong sense of self, and can be quite stubborn when they've set their mind to something.

Parents

Harlowe's parents are scarcely home. They are almost always on far-away business trips, and send home money for to use for food and clothes and whatever they need for school, and to upkeep the house. Harlowe has been taking care of themself and their younger sibling, Sloan, for almost their whole life, in every way besides financially.

Out of fear of going through the adoption system and being separated from their sibling, Harlowe has kept it a secret that their parents are absent. They also feel a sense of pride in keeping their sibling alive and well, and don't want to give that up.

Harlowe does not hold as much resentment or upset for their parents as they probably should. Instead they hold tightly to a constant feeling that maybe, if they do a good enough job getting themself and their sibling all the way to age 18, their parents will come back and feel relieved they no longer have to deal with the stress of children, and be happy with them for doing such a good job, and they can be a family again.

About Sloan

Sloan is currently starting high school. Harlowe has been raising her without strong concept of gender norms and expectations; Sloan currently uses she/they pronouns. Harlowe is about five years older than her.

Being Sloan's sole caregiver since about a year after she was born, with ever-decreasing frequency of parental care, the two have been very close for a long time and had to depend on each other for almost everything.

Their parents- specifically their dad- would return for a longer period to make sure the kids were enrolled in school, each time one moved from elementary to middle to high. When Sloan was in elementary, and Harlowe started middle-school, they would leave their final class early every day to be able to pick her up on time so she didn't have to walk home alone at such a young age. Harlowe has many experiences of making sacrifices to help Sloan have support and a sense of normalcy.

Music

Music has always been a big part of Harlowe's life. Before their parents were so absent, their mother taught them the basics to ukulele, because it was easiest for them to hold. They've since taught themself the guitar, bass, and a bit of piano. They know how to read and write sheet music, and almost always have an earbud in or headphones on. They want to create music professionally if possible, once Sloan is in a spot where she no longer relies on Harlowe for as many resources.

Relationships

Harlowe has been in relationships before, sometimes bringing someone home, but Sloan has always disliked each the person. Harlowe cares greatly about their partner being able to get along with their sibling. Their most recent relationship was somewhat emotionally abusive, and Harlowe came out of it a bit jaded by the idea of another relationship. They've been working a lot instead, and have started taking online college courses in the evenings.
