Val Salia

Yeahhh with what V&V are talking about, it seemed like a good time to get this subject FieldGuide'd out!

Val Salia

It would be very tan colored.

Val Salia

A few of them at least!

Try again in about a week, it'll suddenly be there I promise

They're physically mature at three years old, so even the really smart ones like Vislet or Biezel don't have much life experience even when fully mature. Someone else commented that the Elders may be using the Zat Zings to extend their lifespans. Biezel, Katajack and Vizlet have all noted that Narklet seems weirdly clever for someone so young. I wonder if he's actually as young as he seems. I'm willing to bet he knows exactly what happened to Kass and that the Zat Zhing was going to be used by one the Elders to extend their lives, which is why he thinks a human being turned into a Yinglet accidentally is a disaster.

Very informative.

In which we learn a bit about the present and the past, and absolutely do not foreshadow anything.

I was definitely curious about how the enclave network operates, so the information here is certainly timely! Now I'm curious how past rebellions have gone. I'm guessing they were either quashed or the involved enclaves wound up dying out. We shouldn't be surprised to see an order for one of the females (maybe Lippie) to leave, which will cause murmurs and make the VS settlement have to consider their position carefully.

Ooohhhh, a tasty lil tidbit of lore! Gosh, at this rate you'll be able to compile a document made purely out of the Field Guide pages

Flora P-Stylianides

When you think about the complexity of maintaining these Yinglet enclaves really shows yinglets to be smarter than one may think.

CompletelyNewguy

I think you have a misprint. Probably a collector's item...

I tried turning my monitor around but still couldn't read the back of the pamphlet.

Little Napoleon

Ah, so it's not happening simultaneously. I remember you said it pretty much happed as illustrated, but without the transformation. It actually works better if it's in the future and Yinglets are mote wide spread. Cairo can easily be explained as either being stolen by humans as an egg or Younglet or even fostered by them if things work out and Vislet gets her way. A minor tweak to the story would be that Cairo the Yinglet comes to Antenill with a small group of humans, is attacked by a jealous Ickney and everything mostly happens the same after Cairo gets bitey. Head cannon is that as Younglet Cairo learned the only way to keep human children who were bigger and stronger than her from hurting her was to bite, so it's her go to instead of the harmless usual female dominance smek fight.

John C Butler

Size issue. The termites need to be able to close the vents, so too big of a vent opening would be bad. As for why humans can’t just do that… let’s face it, outside of Ivenmoth, do you know of many humans that think and act rationally where other species are concerned? πŸ˜‰

Courtney Rayle

Yeah it's a sort of semi-canon story based a good number of years after the comic, pretty much!

Val Salia

Why can't they just put a boneworm grub in their ceilings and be done with it.

Val Salia

With the Valsalian Enclave being the northernmost official Enclave, that leads me to think the Antenill "Enclave" that Cairo took over from Ickney in "Of Endings and Beginnings" isn't an official Enclave at all. Matriarch Zebelebala was probably a Rogue female who ran off with some willing males to start her own Enclave, which would explain why Ickney had no support from the Elders and had no idea what she was doing as Matriarch. The irony here is that Cairo, a human educated Yinglet, is doing pretty much what Matriarch Vizlet wants to do for Yinglets as a whole. And it's going on maybe 100 miles north of Val Salia without anyone there knowing about it. This Field Guide also brings up an interesting point regarding Kass. The Elders will see her as a resource to be exploited once they become aware of her. It might be in her best interest to make it public that she was once a human male.I also feel like now that Kass is feeling better, once Vislet talks to her and realizes she's mostly functional, Kass is going to get tossed into the deep end of Yinglet politics.

The first part reminds me of termite mounds in Africa and other places. The heat in Africa is especially harsh and the mold some termites farm needs very precise temperatures, so they have a huge network of vents that they open or block as needed to make sure the fungus has the right conditions to grow. Shockingly, they can maintain 80 degrees F inside the mound even when temps outside either soar to 110+ degrees F during the day or plummet to less than 60 degrees F at night. Architects are taking cues from how the termites manipulate temperature with just vents, and several new buildings in Africa have tried employing these vent systems and been able to cut way down (or eliminate the need for) AC. (And I’m sure Valsalia has probably heard of this and is using it for inspo. 😘)
