Out-of-Placers #136; Field Guide: Antiquities

It is highly suspected by many academics that the closely-guarded secrets of Baramor's ability to produce higher-grade steel are owed to the knowledge of some Antiquities that they refuse to share with the outside world.

Countless efforts have been made by other nations and non-sovereign forces to convince Baramor to either share their knowledge, or allow a tour of their workshops. But so far, they ain't budging.

Comments

Well summed up! You tongue-wagger.

Thorin N. Tatge

Good point!

My comment was erased, reloading... I zhink zhis ought to be standard reading for all archaeologists and historians. No one else zhat I know of has ever expressed ze extended meaning of artifacts and zheir meanings anywhere near as good as zhis. We now have definite samples of advanced technology. Za mini light display and "cattle prods" demonstrate photovoltaics and electronics. Za stellar system diagram and za northern constellation wizh its polar star indicate it is not our solar system. Tin, suggested by mentions of bronze, is now firmly established as canon in zheir free-metals inventory, and za metallurgy of steel is understood by zhem at za elemental level. And we have a calendar, wizh a Year Zero, suggesting events zhat changed za world. So much lore, so-so many questions answered. But wizh zhose "answers" come so-so-so many more questions. Such as to keep our typing fingers dancing and our tongues wagging from now 'till St Swizzen's Day!

Zhe Missing Drake

The only issue with that is the year 650 though, if it was earth it would be at least 2000

Plorthos

I think the trope of a fantasy world actually being a post apocalyptic advanced earth is a bit overdone at this point, though this one doesn't seem to be earth since 650 doesn't match up with our calendar

Plorthos

I bet day 1 of year 0 was also known landing day >w>

T0mmen

Seems to have elements of The Dragon Riders of Pern.

Estragon

Yup, and the night sky is very alien indeed...

Hifhiu

Oh noo! Not Year Zero~! So that transformy zhing must be an antiquity... all the more reason for House Ivenmoth to search for information about it and others like it. Heck, if people once made artifacts that turned humans into yinglets, maybe this IS post-apocalyptic Earth... but a very furry future of Earth, after whole populations changed themselves into weird invented animal-people and changed their animals into weird custom animals, just for fun! And Greater Yinglets are genetically programmed to destroy Lesser Yinglets because it's a clan war or corporate warfare or maybe the Lesser Yinglets have just been officially deprecated by their creators.

Thorin N. Tatge

Next year we're going to start referring to 2020 as "Year 0".

PyroVulpes

Well, it's post-apocalyptic something, but no reason it needs to be Earth (and I suspect it isn't, given the life-forms we've seen).

Jesse Whyte

I love the world building going into this comic. I'm also a fan of the humor mixed in. XD

Ngrasta

And the "Lost Colony" hypothesis gets more evidence. Hm.

Vicroc4

I LOVE fantasy settings where I can't tell whether or not the world is post-apocalyptic Earth.

Chrysalis

yay lore!
