The Out-Of-Placers #85 (Repost)

Pictured above: a massive, nearly-brainless cargo behemoth, known to various local peoples as kargurhevd, hauler-crabs, osseous rex, and most often "those big slow things that drop a million stinking eggs every couple months."

Their forward crawl is only slightly faster than a human's brisk walking pace, but they continue moving forward as they sleep, require relatively little daily nutrition for their size, and contain a great many (mostly) sterile water-bladders, which expert handlers can funnel a tap into, making them essentially a giant walking fresh water container.

They drink salt water and filter it through their systems, so while they are very useful along coastal regions with little to no fresh water, their specializations make them far too expensive to raise and employ in most other types of environments. Some are kept as curiosities by nobles.

Reposted because I forgot a couple o' things!

Thanks as usual to Raptie for handling the character coloring and shading on this page.

I like this level of world-building

Simone Spinozzi

The world building on the cargo crabs blurb is fantastic. Honestly the world building is a big deal to me.

Faraday Cage

Is that incense thingy the Val Salian equivalent of Wunderbaum? (Sorry, this comment was deleted with the former post.)

Since I reset the number after the prologuey section, it's actually at 123!

Val Salia

Oh that's just one of the regular gulf-going cargo ships, always some trade going on at the docks!

Val Salia

Haha yeah; just caught that last stray "th" this morning!

Val Salia

I tell ya, rehab enough birds and you get that motion hardwired into your brain

Val Salia

I'll be keeping a close eye on that; wanna make sure people aren't charged for anything I haven't done the work on!

Kass is a lucky girl rat stork thing

Jaws18301

It looks more like the Maelstrom than the Wraith to me -- the Wraith always had a slightly bird-like outline, with the long pointed nose and wide wing-like sail.

Darth Pseudonym

It's an interesting design, sort of reminds me of some of the ships from Spelljammer, or the Wraith from The Pirates of Dark Water with added outriggers.

Reposted comment: Even more than their loyalty to each other, the complete open honesty of Kass and Elim's friendship is one of my favorite things about this story. Also, thank you for preemptively answering the SO MANY QUESTIONS I had about the cargo behemoth, but now I have almost as many about that mysterious boat behind it.

Zhat Kargurhevd and zhe distant but approaching trimaran look like zhey could be right at home on one of Roger Dean's classic Yes album covers & sleeves! It looks like Kass & Elim have made zhe town limits, but zhey may still be some ways away from zhe gates of Zhe Teezh. Will zhey make it zhrough zhe gates before Brakka & Co arrive? Or are zhey already lying-in-wait in a dark alley along zhe way? As for "helping" Elim feel better, Kass could go to zhe baker, and scav out on bread & biscuits until she hoarks. Which should only take barely a nibble. But zhen, zhere's zhe chance she may run into Zhe Oracle while zhere. No no, our Sopretty Lady should stay far far away from zhe bakery! On zhe repost, I had to do a side-by-side to find a change. So far, I only see zhe badge. But I zhink zhere might be anozher zhing to change zhough, zhe "though" in zhe first panel.

Zhe Missing Drake

It's a minor thing, but you really got the Yinglet walking down. Really looks like you can see the implied bobbing up and down in the Ying stride, which is really cool in a still image. Awesome work Val!

ArcadeDragon

Oh nvm. Though I think it made me pay once more? "Paid for by patreons"

Why repost?
