You should absolutely listen to Trench - understanding some of the lore will certainly help going into the album, since much of it is communicated outside the songs themselves (such as in the music videos and letters available online). At the very least, watch the 4 minute "I Am Clancy" video they released which recaps the basic storyline up until this album. Overall though, I can't think of any other band with a storyline this detailed and impressive - now spanning 4 albums. Clancy was supposed to be the conclusion of the storyline, but was surprisingly light on lore - really only evident in Overcompensate and Paladin Straight tracks, while those two songs and Navigating were the only 3 videos added to the lore storyline (despite every song having a video). Seems likely that there will be one more album to wrap everything up, as this seems to end on a cliff hanger. Well worth checking out the video for Paladin Straight as it visually stunning (it's the one they invested in the most for this album), while Lavish is also creative and funny. In addition to Trench, I would recommend Scaled and Icy - it's a different sound for them (Tyler wrote it during Covid and wanted it to be more upbeat), though there seems to be some regrets that it was not as detailed/layered as Trench or Clancy (on Backslide, there's a line saying "Kinda wished I never did Saturday" - a reference to perhaps the most popular song from that album). And definitely check out a live show next time they're around - it's just the two of them on stage during the show. During the Scaled and Icy Tour they did incorporate a live band for roughly half the show, but scraped that for the latest tour. The same band appeared on their Live Stream event, which is difficult to find but really impressive.

I know a there's a lot of discourse around the Scaled and Icy album (TOP fan of 10+ years and I slept on that one until this year I went back and listened) and I would say worth it!

It actually started with blurryface and Tyler has also taken certain metaphors from Vessel and their self titled album, and incorporated them into the lore (such as the violent island being a lyric from the song 'Migraine'). Scaled and Icy, the album in between Trench and Clancy, is also part of the lore. The album title is an anagram for 'Clancy is dead'. Within the story it's supposed to be propaganda from the antagonists of the story (the bishops), which is why it sounds a little more cheerful than the rest of their music, but that is also related to the pandemic back then, which made Tyler want to write some more uplifting music. It was a very cool concept and there is definitely some good stuff on there, but unfortunately the reception wasn't that great (I personally think an EP would've been better). Anyway, I'm just barely scratching the surface here, and I'm not even an expert. One thing to check out though is this website where it all started, with letters from Clancy and a bunch of other cryptic stuff: http://dmaorg.info/found/15398642_14/clancy.html Another thing that also sets them apart is the effort they put into their work and the relationship with their fans. For example during the pandemic they created a 'livestream experience' with them performing songs on a talkshow within the city of Dema (part of Trench). They also made an alternate reality game with a bunch of hidden hints and puzzles, and in general many things they do have little references or easter eggs surrounding the lore hidden inside them.

There’s a lot of lore behind it obviously, which would be cool if you want to look into it more. They also did a music video for every song off clancy, so you can check them out too. I would recommend going onto the twenty one pilots youtube and go to their playlist ‘the story’, which has all the music videos that relate to the storyline, and the I Am Clancy video that explains it quickly. Basically, Tyler’s gone through a lot of mental health issues, so he’s created this story to personify his demons. Stressed out has the line ‘my name’s blurryface and I care what you think’ which is the basis of the Dema storyline, blurryface represents all his insecurities and struggles. This was started in the album Blurryface and was more fleshed out in Trench, which would be a great one to react to. In trench there’s this city called Dema, run by the 9 bishops that represent Blurryface. They control a religion that tries to convince people to kill themselves, and Tyler is trying to fight back from their control over his life, metaphorical of real life personal struggles. During this time there is letters posted online from a character called Clancy, who is also trying to escape Dema. Scaled and Icy is their album after trench, its much more pop and mainstream because Tyler is being controlled by Dema to produce music that’s popular to the masses. In Clancy, Tyler is trying to destroy Dema once and for all. We also find out that Clancy and Tyler are one and the same. Clancy is all about trying to take control over your mental health, but you keep relapsing (or backsliding) into a darker place. Lavish is about the music industry and the dark side of it. Paladin Strait represents the final battle, and Blurryface speaks to Tyler right at the end. You can go super in depth but that’s the gist of it, hope that helps a bit

If y’all want more info they did a livestream for all the music videos/ songs and they explain some of the story. And I saw them live in Brooklyn in September and can confirm one of the best shows I’d ever been to!
