Dad Reacts to Bon Iver - 22, A Million

Dad Reacts to Bon Iver - 22, A Million

Comments

The fact that Kevin has presumably still never heard Holocene is a travesty.

14:00 No one knows what it means but it's provocative

Can’t agree more. For Emma is brilliant and beautiful, but is the rather cliché emo singer-songwriter album. Bon Iver, Bon Iver is completely out of this world. So deep, layered and a transpersonal experience.

Nathan Mandjes

YES!! This one! It’s arguably the best live recording of Bon Iver on Youtube. NPR for the win.

Nathan Mandjes

There is so much to discover and decipher about the band Bon Iver. And they are not easy listening albums. Great video guys.

Nathan Mandjes

Big Thief

Cyrus Nelson

carrie & lowell!

Burntreon

For Emma plz...

Tanner Brown

was screaming through the screen to put the lyrics away! bon ivers magic is something that unravels as u get to know it. also think the progression to this third album is super important in appreciating it as well. thanks for listening regardless x

Nat Dwelly

Im so in love with this album, saw them live shortly after it was released

Malakai

Honestly 22, a million is one of my favorite albums of all time. I understand some people don't like it cuz its so weird but its always kinda clicked w/ me.

Benjamin Gopoyan

I always imagined Ed Sheeran and Bon Iver duetting on 715 Creeks.

Ben Garnhum

Yall gotta do James Blake Colour in Anything it matches this album

Rasha Rahman

FOR EMMA

Daniel

Weird choice to start with his 3rd album

Hey Fella

l

fobos

I second the Sigur Ros listening party 🎉❤️

Kinsey Manno

Definitely should check out his debut album

Tristan Brown

"Is that how it's supposed to sound?" encapsulates everyone's first listen of 22, A Million lol I remember reading that they recorded to tape, crumpled it up, wrote on it, etc and played it back for some tracks. Agree with others that the 2 earlier albums are much more first listen friendly and absolutely worth checking out.

Graham Herceg

Life of Pablo pleaseeee

David Cresson

so when do the son reacts videos start??

Cameron Ackerman

lies

Cameron Ackerman

I ain’t even gonna lie this album was not good

Ikilledkain

Can’t wait for The Life of Pablo ☺️☺️

smokey_vibez

While I love 22, A Million, I feel like his self-titled album still is Bon Iver's masterpiece and an album that's way easier to get into on first listen. Might be worth checking this on out!

Mathieu Dionne

This a top 5 album for me, so I'm glad you guys did this one! Here's a great article that will give you a deeper appreciation of the sounds and how exactly they were made. It also gives some more background on the overall story of the album. https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/inside-track-bon-iver-22-a-million

Mark Haugen

He didn’t he just said he didn’t want to go through the 45 minutes of research to google his name and then find something happened is all

Nick Ralston

At least they did Phoebe that album rules

Fred

Definitely not enough female artists, but olivia is on the track of what your dad might enjoy

Jayde Laws

Olivia Rodriguez, Pablo, J cole, Pablo

Jayde Laws

I understand totally that this album is hard to digest, and if you want to try to understand it a little bit more I would go watch the renditions of these songs here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJNi7aRwUzU&t=2792s I think watching them live will help a little bit, I love Bon Iver and a major part of it is because Justin Vernon and the band are extremely talented and clearly care about their craft a lot.

Miles Jackson

we need pablo

Ethan Blart

I Love your content, i'd like you to listen to the two Joji's albums, or at least his second album "Nectar". You can see with that the fast and amazing musical evolution that he has had

Adrivarix

This is a great interview/press conference he did when the album was released - might give more context to this album! https://youtu.be/eNqCVfC4oj4

Allie

just subscribed and this was going to be one of my first requests. thank you

Zach Berry

Watching this video, this is exactly who I thought of, a good balance of experimental with beautiful vocals and instrumentation.

Tim P

Watching this video actually reminded me and honed in on what I loved about this album when I first listened to it. I'd love to hear your reaction to his debut album - his vocals are super raw and beautiful on that, and the album gives you context on his original musical style this is a great version of skinny love from that album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLOr_FrJJWA

Naveen Morris

Hated this album on my first listen, but the more i listen to it the deeper i fall in love with it

Erlend M

lfgg

Erlend M

apricot princess by rex orange county would be a fun watch !

Oskar Airas

Rex Orange County - Pony , or James Blake - The colour in anything would be dope!

Eduardo Magana

his concert was one of the most amazing moments of my life, it was pure magic

Cameron Ackerman

looking forward to the rest of his discography if you guys are gonna do it. he's an amazing artist

Cameron Ackerman

also "29 #strafford apts" is such a special song. happy you thought the same

Chives, the Band

not an original comment at this point but needs to be said: go through the rest of Bon Iver's catalogue. Kevin will be blown away with For Emma and Bon Iver, Bon Iver. Btw- thanks for this. Love when y'all do a change of pace for albums like this.

Chives, the Band

This Old Dog - Mac DeMarco

CFH

I think he needs to listen to For Emma or Bon Iver, Bon Iver to understand what a musical talent Justin is. Or at least listen to his AIR Studios Jagjaguwar Session version of Wash.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=di4sQKy_VI4

Ron LaFlamme

if you want to give Bon Iver I would suggest listening to this live performance of 22, A Million plus other stuff but it really shows the emotion of the album. Here is the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJNi7aRwUzU&t=2797s&ab_channel=NPRMusic

Jamie Bekins

Blood Bank would be a cool patreon only as far as Bon Iver goes

Zachar T

Why did he say Sufjan also has allegations? He doesn’t have any that I could find

Fred

Thank you for covering this album!! 🥲 Took time to grow on me too, but became one of my favorites! Lyrics seem to have a lot of references that only make sense to him, but music & ways he sings is what made me connect emotionally to it. It reminds me of struggling with anxiety & how frustrating/confusing that can be, but then having little moments where you see the beauty in people/the world - like all of those feelings happening at once. Ugh, I love it! Highly suggest this NPR concert for the live versions: https://youtu.be/YJNi7aRwUzU. No worries if it’s just not your cup of tea though!! 🤗

Allie

God, this album is the closest thing I’ve seen to perfection.

Dre

This content is really good for my mental health tbh. Please take a puff and do a Kurt Vile record.

Zachar T

You guys should check out James Blake!! His 2019 album is great with some awesome features!

Zoë

any brockhampton album!

slow chaz

I really hope you end up checking out For Emma, Forever Ago aswell, i really think you'd like it!

Whoops

I think he would connect a lot more with for emma on first listen. Hoping you do a reaction to for emma soon, I LOVE that record.

Jackerco

Hi! Would love to see you react to Black Messiah by D'Angelo

erick guerrero

Would love a Sigur Ros reaction from you guys. Like BlockchainV said, Agaetis Byrjun is usually seen as their best album, but Takk... is my favorite together with Med Sud i Eyrum Vid Spilum Endalaust. They're a band that sing in Icelandic, but for Takk... they combined Icelandic with a lot of non-language existing of very cool melodies, which they called Hopelandic. I feel like you both would really like Sigur Ros, would be a really cool reaction.

Koen

Bit of a weird entry point for Bon Iver tbh. Feel like he would love For Emma and his self titled, but this is kind of like starting listening to Kanye at Yeezus.

Nick

Takk... is my favourite Sigur Ros album - I can't recommend it enough.

yellowflannel

Damn, I just heard that both Mark Kozelek's Benji and Sufjan Stevens were mentioned in the video, hope we will see reaction to them in the future :) Also heard the Sigur Rós discussion - some of their albums are god tier and I highly recommend checking them out. Ágætis byrjun and ( ) are great but my personal favourite of theirs is Takk...

yellowflannel

OR $UICIDEBOYS

Sebastian Caines

OR ANY EARL SWEATSHIRT

Sebastian Caines

PLEASE DO YUNG LEAN- POISON IVY

Sebastian Caines

I think Kevin would LOVE bon iver’s next album. Hope this one doesn’t scare him off

CRASH

SUFJAN PLEASE

Fred

I also saved my balls

Cojotaho

yessss

Figgerson

Black Country New Road reaction plz

Ben Steger

Oh, and now we need a "Sour" reaction 😂

Lukas Spieß

This album really grew on me over several listens after it came out. I definitely feel like it benefits from listening all the way through, without interruptions. For me, it really builds an atmosphere that I love

Lukas Spieß

Hey buddy I was thinking as a side episode you could show your dad the Kanye and Charlamagne tha God interview history! Love from Ireland

Jake Bradley

I'll echo everyone else here saying that For Emma, Forever Ago would also be a great listen.

nick

Used to listen to this album almost every night to get to sleep, it's so beautiful and calming

jeff smith

I think Kevin would like this a lot more if he just closed his eyes and listened to the whole album. It really just washes over you as all you can do is focus on the tiny details in the production. It's that exact experience that made this one of my favourite albums of all time

jeff smith

Bon Iver's lyrics are definitely abstract. At least for me, it is more about the feelings evoked than the lyrical content. I'm confident this album will grow on you. Thanks for the great video!

Graham Herceg

I feel like knowing the progression in Bon Ivers sound is important to get into this album. For Emma, Forever Ago is one of only a few albums I think is perfect so would love a reaction of that.

Gabriel Macdonald

My favourite album ever, so happy to see you guys listen to it!!

Ben Martin

Please react to the self titled album it’s also incredible and I think you would like it more on first listen!!!!

Natalie Slusser

Great stuff guys!! I feel like kevin would enjoy bon iver, bon iver a lot based on this reaction. And if you can look past Mark Kozelek being a piece of shit then you must do Sun Kil Moon’s Ghosts of the Great Highway! The best ”modern” alternative/folk album ever made! (Carry me ohio & Duk koo kim are 11/10 songs)

Onni Tulensalo

definitely think they would've been better off starting off with For Emma or the self-titled. IMO they're way more accessible on first listen

johnlec

This didn’t stick on first listen either but I’ve really grown to love certain songs and the album as a whole. Please listen to a Sufjan album!! Musically and lyrically beautiful

Uma McGuire

This old bastard doesn’t understand anything! Why doesn’t he grow a beard and use autotune!

RINGER 13

definitely not one to read the lyrics to. thatll throw anyone off.

Kevin Purcell

Napping to bon iver music is one of my favorite passed times

Mitchell Hunt

Dear Connor. For the love of god, you have to listen to Sigur ros - Takk... I'm not exaggerating, when I say that it's better than sex. I'm sure you'll love it. Thanks for the video, your dad and you once again saving my day. Peace and love.

BOOM

Also really agree with Connor that Bon Iver’s discography in total is really not about the lyrics - the earlier two albums a little more, but it’s more about the emotion in his voice and how he portrays it in his music

Megan Glynn

oh my god he hated it i'm devastated

Big Dog

Agree with other comments that this is a really hard introduction to Bon Iver! Self-titled and i,i show off Justin’s vocals and emotive music - and I think Kevin would really really enjoy! Loved this reaction.

Megan Glynn

Bon Iver-Bon Iver is his best imo tbh. Raw and emotional. But 22 Million is also a good listen

Teemu

Love that your issue with a father-son bath episode was the risk of electrocution.

Taylor "Armac" Quenneville

Tokyo is still my favorite version of all time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIi3XT2i0qI

Nick

This album gets better as time goes, but in my mind, it's partially amazing because of the background and prior discography that builds into this

Mitchell Hunt

The album is definitely better on a 2nd or 3rd listen. Didn't resonate with me either on the first listen.

Matthew Korsak

I was so excited for this one. 715 creeks is one of my favorite songs ever

Big Dog

Kevin!! You absolutely need to listen to 715 Creeks on this show! https://youtu.be/qc-r8d3beZU 22:20 in! Amazing, we can hear is voice more

Simon Brissette

Agreed! My favorite album of all time

Nick

My favorite artist of all time and my 5th favorite album of all time (Self titled is first) Kevin, I think you would really resonate more with the self titled album. More traditional song structures and it's all Justin's normal voice. 22, a million was a really experimental album and it took a few listens for most people to get into it. The self titled record is a lot more approachable.

Nick

Been wearing my tour t-shirt from this album all day, it's a sign to drop everything immediately!

John Brown

Yes! Completely different than 22, A Million

Daq

I think Kevin would like for Emma, forever ago a lot! It’s completely different than this. Gotta check it out sometime

Daq

saw the notification, thought it was TLOP. this is a good consolation tho

bL

Never heard of Bon Iver, super hyped to experience this with ya’ll

Fishbeater

Never heard this, excited!

Cody

Definitely didn’t think this would be so soon. Great album can’t wait to watch this

RINGER 13

I hope you guys react to Bon iver, Bon iver album. Their best imo

Jack

Pumped for this.

Jacob Richards

ayyy i didnt think you guys would react to this this soon but ayyyyyyyy

Isaac medina

Wow thats a very welcome surprise

Krøllern

LITERALLY AT THE MALL GONNA SIT DOWN AND WATCH THIS WHOLE THING IN THE STORE IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ONE
