(No spoiler) The reason she’s called a “toy” is because the story is set in ancient Chinese society, where low-born commoners like Maomao were not valued. Close relationships between commoners and high-ranking nobles like Jinshi were nearly impossible. Gaoshun assumed Jinshi was simply amused by a “new toy.” In that era, only a princess could marry a prince. Marriages between commoners and nobility were rare, and even if it happened, the commoner would usually become a concubine, not a primary wife (excluding the emperor, of course 😆). Social ranks were complex—for example, even among lady-in-waiting positions, there were clear distinctions. While Maomao was one of them, her background was extremely low. Many ladies-in-waiting were daughters of officials of various ranks, serving imperial consorts. (Not all of them, but commonly with high-rank concubines) That’s why, in the Garden Party episode, when Maomao scared another lady-in-waiting, that woman threatened to tell her father about Maomao’s actions. Maomao is fully aware of her status and always tries to avoid trouble, even accepting severe punishments like execution if necessary. Even the emperor wouldn’t let personal feelings override official duties, so Jinshi—despite his power—couldn’t openly favor her if she committed a serious offense. In this society, actions were subtle and full of hidden meanings. Helping or harming someone could easily be labeled treason, punishable by the extermination of one’s entire family (big family, from the oldest to the youngest people, and even your relatives @@). That's crazy, I know. Although the anime tones down the harshness and injustice of ancient China, the basic rules remain. For example, in reality, commoners couldn’t freely speak to nobles without permission—if Maomao voiced her opinion without permission, she could be accused of insolence and punished immediately. This is a bit long, but I hope it helps you better understand the anime’s historical context. Thanks for reading!

It's so cute how Maomao and Jinshi are developing their dynamic hahaha. I try my best to avoid being too intense about this anime, but yes: It is deep, and it's 100% okay to pause or go back to keep up with all the info (It's kind of a detective show after all. It has little mysteries per episode but a larger mystery to be solved along the season). The moment with the music and the memories was a good retrospective. Maomao has been surrounded by death and murder, so it's only natural for her to have those depressive thoughts. Last thing then I'll shut up lol: At the tea party, each concubine had their respective food taster behind her. The woman who laughed at Lishu and accidentally saved her (by changing the dishes) was Lishu's food taster. Ah-Duo was next to Lihua. I recall it being kind of a jumpscare for you because you thought it was ultimate androgynous jinshi hahaha. Sorry for the long ass comment. I think your reactions are really entertaining and funny! And it's always a plus if you can give your insight ><
