I don't think it's ever explained why Rod turned into such a gigantic titan. Theories range from him licking the serum instead of it being injected, to him transforming while having a broken back (this is my personal take, since they took the time to include the sound effect of his back when Historia threw him). Some like to combine the broken back with the possibility of the serum having come from the colossal titan, but I don't believe that's ever confirmed.

2025-07-02 17:31:52 +0000 UTCWell, the "hardening one" was also a serum to turn someone into a dumb titan, it's just a special serum (like I commented in the previous episode). The reason it only gave Eren the hability to harden is because eren was already a titan.
